2-Presentation-Pinch Pot Whistles 2

The document provides an introduction to working with clay, including the different stages as it dries and is fired. It discusses pinch pots, a simple clay technique where clay is shaped into a circular form by pinching between the thumb and fingers. Students are then assigned a project to create a clay whistle by attaching two pinch pots to form a hollow ball, adding a mouthpiece, and including a hole to create the whistling sound. Considerations for creative design are discussed.

Introduction to Clay

Clay
• Natural building source.
• Essentially you are working with dirt!
• Ceramics is a Greek word that means pottery.
• Ceramics have played a very important role in history.:
• Many ceramic sculptures and pottery have survived,
and which gives us clues about their culture.
• Ceramics have played a role in all major historic and
current societies.
• Ceramics is one of the earliest forms of art and can be
dated back to 30,000 BC.

Wet Bone dry

Clay

• There are five stages of clay:

Bisque
• Wet: able to mold, easy to work with.
• Leather hard: Halfway dry, can still
work with it, but will easily crack.
• Bone dry: All the water has
completely evaporated, and it is
Leather hard ready for the first round of firing.
• Bisque: The clay has been fired once,
Glazed is now hard, but still fragile.
• Glaze ware: The clay has been coated
with glaze and fired a second time.
• A kiln is essentially a large oven that cooks the clay.
Kiln • It can exceed 2000 degrees.
• A chemical reaction occurs and hardens the clay.
Pinch pots
• Pinch pots are a very
old clay making
process.
• You simply take a ball
of clay, put your thumb
in it, place your fingers
on the outside, and
pinch in a circular, even
motion to form the
clay.
Your assignment:
Clay whistles
• Make two pinch pots.
• Attach them to each other to create a hollow

• Create a mouthpiece.
• Attach the mouthpiece to the pinch pots.
• Create a hole with an angled ramp (to cut the
airflow to create the whistle sound).
• Make sure the whistle works, then attach it to
the ball.
• Add to or carve out to create an interesting
pattern.

The Design…

Consider what whistles are used for and who uses them:

• Alert people • Trains

• Warning • Sports
• The end of the day • Music
• A break • Military
• Time • Hunting
• Police Boats
• The final design is up to you! Try to break away from the original
shape by adding to it and cutting away.
• What does the natural shape of the whistle remind you of?
The Design… • Consider animals, objects, architecture, the sky is the limit!
• Your whistle doesn’t have to represent anything, you can always add
an abstract design.
¡ Whistle ramp

¡ Mouthpiece

¡ Two pinch pots scored and slipped

together to create a hollow ball.
Create a Is interesting.
Is creative.
design Is created by subtractive and additive sculpture (carving
that… away and adding to).

Your whistle
What whistles remind you of.
What you would use your whistle for.
A memory associated with a whistle.
Consider: An animal the shape reminds you of the whistle shape.
A design that the shape reminds you of.
The movement of your breath through the whistle.
• Sketches in sketchbook
• Whether or not your whistle works (before and
after being fired)
• Creativity
Your grade • Design (creativity, craftsmanship, has
subtractive and additive sculpture)
• Effort
• Craftsmanship
• Critique (participation)
