te discover the work ofthe great Eric Ravilous
(1903-1942) Arenowned English arts, Raviious
is widely regarded for his diverse talents, incuding
watercolours, ceramics, and of greatest interest to
‘me, wood engravings which stand out as captivating
expressions of the man's artist vision,
Born in 1903, ric Ravibous was jst stating his
art training in Eastbourne, Sussex, when the Society
of Wood Engravers was founded in 1920. recent
visio the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne opened my
eyes tothese wonderful wood engravings, and @
dedicated collection of such works ~ the largest of
its kin, n fact — includes examples of the earest
Pictures of Sussex, such as depictions ofthe Sussex
coast and South Downs for example. Having the
opportunity to see these up close gave me a
unique insight into the sil of using the waod black
medium, nt to mention a thorough knowledge and
understanding of the process involved in transfering
‘these images to paper.
Boxwood & scorpers
‘The majority ofthese ~ reversed ~ designs were
engravedinto the miror-smooth surface ofan end-grain
boxnood block usinga selection of'scorpers'~ a sort of
miniature gouge — which were fashioned from add pieces
of metal. ln mentionedin his atc, boxwoodis the
preferred species and first choice among Wood engravers
‘wingta its hardness and ability to take the finest ines.
Reavilous foray into wood engraving began
1820s, wherehe quickly gained recognition for his
‘meticulous craftsmanship and distinctive style. As
confirmed by the selection of wood engravings shown
above, Ravilous’ work often depicted scenes of rural
Ie, landscapes and maritime themes reflecting a deep
connection ta the English countryside and coastline.

The artist's fascination wit the natural word found
expression in his wood engravings of landscapes,
where Raullousskifully rendered the play of ight on

tashare in is admiation forthe beauty and tranquility
ofthe English countryside.
Traglaly, Eric Ravilous’Mfe was cut short during Werld
