How to Create a Resume?

If you have more than one portfolio link, then do

make a separate section for that.
Like, for content writing – mention the type of content, as blogs, articles, topics, or the area of
content (science articles, fashion blogs, etc). Also mention if worked under social media marketing or
SEO.
usually, companies don’t give
that much weightage to this section.

Exercise: 7 steps to Creating an Impactful Resume

This is a meaningful exercise that will help you to brainstorm, organize and
consolidate the information you need to write an effective resume.

The aim of this exercise is to guide you through the groundwork and research you
should do prior to drafting a resume.

1. Identify a specific job title/role.

 Focus is important – your resume needs to be tailored to a specific role.

 If you send out a generic resume hoping that it will fit any role, it does not
reflect that you know what you want and this will be a red flag to employers!

2. Find out the requirements for this role.

 Research the job title, industry and company.

 Read the job posting and requirements very carefully.
 Find out exactly what skills are required for such a role.
 It would be helpful to speak to someone in the industry or someone with
firsthand experience of this role.

3. Make a list of your relevant educational background.

4. Make a list of your relevant work history.

 Include period of employment and designation.
 If you do not have any formal work experience, include internships or activities
or engagements that showcase these skills.

5. List your Top 5 skills that are relevant to the target job.

 What makes YOU a suitable candidate for this role?

6. Illustrate each of these skills using past experience.

 Think of practical examples and accomplishments that highlight the skills you
have identified.
 These can be from past work experience, educational experience, activities
etc.
 Try to come up with as many relevant examples as you can, and then narrow
them down by selecting the strongest and most memorable example for each
of your Top 5 skills.
 Focus on accomplishments rather than duties.

7. Write results-oriented action statements for each example.

 Well-written action statements are concise and precise.

 They convey exactly what you have done and how well you performed.
 Begin action statements with action verbs that show initiative. E.g. Created,
Implemented, Developed, Designed, Conceptualised
 Quantify your results where possible.
 Try to combine your action and results in one bullet point. E.g. Conceptualized
a social media campaign that led to a 200% increase in post engagement
within six weeks.
 Avoid introductory statements such as “During this role…”, “I was responsible
for…”, “As a part of my internship I…” (Remember, your resume is prime real
estate; there is no space to waste!)

Examples of strong action statements

 Generated 30 sales leads out of which 8 translated into new clients with
confirmed projects.
 Increased B2B sales revenue by 150% through revised pricing strategy.
 Designed a 2-hour online learning program for compliance training.
 Created an efficient data-entry system to cut down on admin time.
 Revamped lesson plans to include interactive activities leading to doubling in
student sign-ups.
 Built a feature to provide 24-hour online chat support to clients globally.
