E D I T O R S N O T E

My journey with RSD Rugby

Started when I rang the doorbell to the RSD Rugby Head-Office in
Pretoria six years ago, not quite sure what to expect as I was
coming from a golf course environment and to now enter the
world of youth rugby was kind-of unfamiliar territory to me. Then
found myself a few minutes later sitting at the desk of RSD
Rugby’s MD, Kelly-Anne van Coller. I immediately sensed an
excitement and passion in what they do, and soon came to
realise that RSD Rugby was a tight-knit family. But what I still
couldn’t figure out at that time was how a three or four year old
child could learn how to play rugby! Crazy hey!

So my first day at RSD Rugby arrived, during which I made use of

the opportunity to sneak out to the rugby field where the
coaches were busy with a training session. I recall hearing
something about “the peanut gallery” which I “tongue in the
cheek” accepted with a smile. By then I was already able to have
ticked off several boxes.

It was however only when I attended the first Rugby Day that I
truly experienced the difference that RSD Rugby makes in
contributing to the development of children who participated in
the rugby skills development program. That day, the bright eyed,
smiling faces, full of anticipation to play rugby, proved to me, that
RSD Rugby was definitely doing something right!

It was also noticeable to me how good the coaches were with the
children. Introducing young children to rugby and developing
their skills seemed to be a very satisfying experience for the RSD
coaches.

So I guess if you're ever curious about what RSD Rugby can offer
your child, get yourself to a rugby day in your region. Not only will
you be pleasantly surprised, you will experience it first hand. Just
like I did!

Future rugby stars shine in Kimberley
Buzzing with excitement the RSD
Rugby players had the chance to meet
and chat with some of their rugby
heroes at Windhoek Draft Park in
Kimberley recently.

But obviously there was a lot more

going on that meets the eye, as these
kids too, took it to the field in a pre-
match game during the Currie Cup
match between the Cheetahs and
Griquas.

Agreed that both teams stepped out as

winners, as stated by "team managers"
Ruan Stanissis of RSD Free State Central Ruan Stanissis: RSD Free State Central
and Jaco Dames of the RSD Northern
Cape teams, "it is our love for rugby
what brings us together, and this
passion that we share proved again that
rugby is one of the best sports for
making a positive impact on young
players."

You might be opponents on the field

but, when the game is over, you are
connected by your love of the sport. The
sense of working together and feeling
supported, creates a strong
environment in which young players
can learn. teaching invaluable lessons
on and off the field. Well done to both Jaco Dames: RSD Northern Cape

children have limited attention span and have limited ability to
process complex situations. This is the best time to develop skills.

This indicates that for this age, the focus of competition and

concept of winning and

losing
Many people confuse the message of not emphasising the result
with not developing a “winning mentality”.
Make lifelong friends
By putting such an emphasis on the win-loss record, we are
creating a generation of players and coaches who are afraid to take Experience positive role

One week a child may be the hero, scoring the winning goal or try.
Develop skills
The next week, he or she may make a mistake causing the team to

will learn from the experience. Build a sense of

belonging
The key message is that if we develop better players who are
committed, who play and train with intensity, players who can set
their own goals and evaluate their own performance then the
winning mentality will be nurtured.

An environment that praises effort while developing commitment

and problem solving, over ability (when one way of doing
something is reinforced), and which encourages critical evaluation
of performance, with players assuming responsibility for their
actions, will develop players who want to win.

Children are competitive by nature. Coaches and parents should

harness the desire to improve performance by encouraging,
supporting, and praising individual improvement. By doing this we
will support players development for the long term.

clinic for boys and girls age groups

during the school holidays.

It will take place over two days from

Trophy Awards
yes or no
The idea of a participating trophy is not to make

everyone a winner, but to acknowledge that the child

put time and effort in to participate and therefore

rewarding the child with a souvenir or remembrance of

the experience. Also something to commemorate their

time as part of a team, the idea therefore rewarding the

child for being part of the rugby day and at the same

time increase the child's self-esteem and instil

important values, which is effective for children in the

age range of 3 to 9 years.

Armand Oeschger: RSD Rugby Limpopo

Being rewarded with a trophy on the day, the child also learn the positive impacts of developing

social skills, an active lifestyle and trying new things. This can have lasting, positive effects on their

development. It is only around the age of 10 to 12 years that when they see everyone, losers included,

receiving trophies, that it can leave a child feeling frustrated, as by this age they understand how the

game is played and that the primary objective is to help their team win.
