Assignment 1B

The document discusses suitable active fire protection systems for an apartment building. It describes both manual and automatic systems, including fire alarms, manual call points, heat detectors, wet pipe sprinklers and hose reel systems. For automatic systems, it explains how sprinklers and hose reels work to detect and suppress fires. Diagrams show the layout of the systems and their components, such as drums, hoses, nozzles and stop valves for hose reels. Floor plans depict the installation of these systems throughout the building.

Apartment
An apartment is a residential unit that is
part of one (or several) residential
buildings, or a separate dwelling within a
house with its own entrance, bathroom
and kitchen. Apartments are typically
one-story units within a multifamily or
multi-unit building. Depending on the
number of units it contains, the building
itself may be commercial property, but
the units themselves are residential real
estate.
An active fire protection system involves a
trigger action in response to a fire. The
response action can be manual, like hand-
operated fire extinguishers, or automatic,
like a sprinkler system. Fundamentally,
active fire protection directly combats the
fire, whether controlling, overpowering or
extinguishing it.

Manual Call Point
A Manual Call Point or Break Glass Call Point is a device which enables
personnel to raise the alarm by breaking the frangible element on the
fascia; this then triggers the alarm.
Heat Detector 01 Commonly Heat detectors work in a similar

Wet Pipe Fire Sprinkler
Systems
Wet pipe fire sprinklers are the most common type of fire
sprinkler system in use.

In a wet pipe fire sprinkler, the water is stored directly in the

pipes and released by heat activated sprinkler heads.

This type of fire sprinkler has the advantage of being able to

activate instantly, with no lag time when the fire sprinkler
heads open.
