Infinitive Used as Subject
The infinitive form of a verb can be used as a noun and can function as
the subject of a verb.
Err¤re est h¥m¤num. To err is human.
When used as a noun, the Am¬cßs hab±re est gr¤tum. To have friends is pleasing.

Though the infinitive is used as a noun, it is not declined and does not
neuter and singular. show case and number. Its gender is neuter. Therefore the predicate adjec-
tive must also be neuter, as h¥m¤num and gr¤tum are in the preceding
examples.
The infinitive may be used as a predicate nominative.
Being a verbal noun, the infinitive may also have an object; note servßs
and am¬cßs in the examples above.

Asking Questions
In Latin, as in English, there are two main types of questions: the first
type asks for information; the second expects only a yes or no answer. To
ask for information in Latin, use an interrogative word—either a pronoun
(quis, who? quid, what?) or an adverb (ubi, where?).

page 96.) However, the perfect stem of third conjugation verbs, like that
of the second conjugation, is often quite different from the present stem.

You will note in the first example on page 137 that L¥cium Corn±lium
identifies the object dominum, stands in direct relation to it, and is in
the accusative like dominum. Am¬c¬s nostr¬s in the second example
identifies naut¬s, the indirect object, and is in the dative, as is naut¬s. This
construction is called apposition. A noun in apposition to (ad + pßnß,
place next to) another noun (or pronoun) is in the same case as that other
noun (or pronoun) and is frequently set off from the rest of the sentence
by commas.

Hints for Developing Word Sense
Few words in any language, except prepositions, etc., have exactly the
same meaning at all times. While words usually have one general mean-
ing, they may have several shades of meaning, which depend entirely upon
their context. Therefore, in translating a Latin word it is necessary to get
its exact meaning (as opposed to its general or “vocabulary” meaning)
from the context or setting it has in a sentence. Let’s look at one verb, agß,
to see how its meaning can vary.

The preceding are only a few of the meanings of agß. When translating,
do not blindly follow the meanings given to words in the vocabulary; fig-
ure out one best suited to the context. In this way you will develop good
judgment and “word sense.”

Word Order
We have seen that the words in a Latin sentence show their connection
with one another by means of endings, regardless of position (unlike
English). Therefore, they may be shifted rather freely without obscuring
the relationship. Even so, the “regular” order is as follows.

Remember:
• Adjectives usually follow their nouns, but adjectives indicating quan-
tity and size usually precede: vir¬ bon¬; mult¬ vir¬.
• Possessive adjectives (meus, tuus, etc.) follow their nouns, unless used
for emphasis.
• A genitive often follows its noun.
• An indirect object often stands before a direct object.
• A word used to ask a question usually stands first, as in English.
Nßnne, for example, is put first in the sentence.
• The verb generally stands last. However, forms of the linking verb are
often placed in the middle of a sentence, as in English.

But this normal order is far less strict in Latin than the normal order in
English. Shifting the word order in Latin serves to bring out varying shades
of emphasis. This is done also in English, though to a lesser degree, largely
in imitation of the Latin. Emphasis is gained in Latin particularly by:
• Putting the emphatic words first in the sentence: Magna erat glßria
Romae!, also common in English: Great was the glory of Rome!
• Separating the emphatic word from the word to which it belongs:
Magn¤s puer am¬cß gr¤ti¤s ±git, The boy thanked his friend very
much.

The owners of houses in Pompeii tried to keep away idlers with such signs
as Øtißs¬s locus hic nßn est. Disc±de, mor¤tor, This is no place for idlers.
Go away, loafer.
Sometimes there are New Year’s greetings or holiday greetings (Iß
S¤turn¤lia). In some cases a record is kept of special events, such as a
birthday or the arrival of the emperor. One writer indicates that he has a
cold. One says that he (or she) baked bread on April 19; another, that he
put up olives on October 16; still another tells of setting a hen on April 30.
One wall lists daily expenditures for cheese, bread, oil, and wine. A laun-
dry list mentions a tunic and a cloak on April 20, underwear on May 7, and
two tunics on May 8. No wonder that some unknown writer scribbled:
“Wall, I wonder that you have not collapsed from having to bear the tire-
some stuff of so many writers.”
When we come to formal notices, we find that election posters play
a prominent part. Advertising in Pompeii was less restrained than in
Herculaneum, and both politicians and shopkeepers went in for the “hard
sell.” These ask support for this man or that because he is deserving or
respectable or honest or because he delivers good bread, etc. The support-
ers include teamsters, tailors, barbers, dyers, and many other groups. One
inscription advocates giving away the money in the public treasury!
Another group of notices advertises the shows of gladiators, similar to
our prizefights. Besides mentioning the number of matches, they often
name other attractions for the fans, such as awnings for sun protection,
sprinklers for dust control, animal fights, and athletic contests.
Hotels and shops are advertised frequently. One hotel in Pompeii offers
a dining room with three couches and all conveniences (commoda). An
apartment house (¬nsula) advertises shops on the ground floor from July 1.
The advertisement suggests “see agent of the owner” for the luxurious

(equestria, suitable for an upperclass tourist) upstairs apartments. A wine
shop in Herculaneum advertised its different wines with a picture of the god
Bacchus and the expression, “Come to the sign of the bowls [of wine]!”
Signs in Pompeii and Herculaneum offer rewards for return of lost or
stolen articles. On one Pompeian sign, a man says that he found a horse on
November 25 and asks the owner to claim it on a farm near the bridge.
