Geothermal Energy: Concepts and Applications

The document provides information about geothermal energy, including its sources from places like geysers, hot springs, and volcanoes. It describes how geothermal power plants work by drilling wells to access hot water or steam from underground, using it to spin turbines and generate electricity. The document also discusses advantages like being renewable and pollution-free, and disadvantages like requiring specific geological conditions and potential environmental impacts.

Direction: The students will organize knowledge

and ideas using concept map. Fill in six words
associated with geothermal energy and write it
in the concept map provided.

Energy from Volcano
Geothermal Energy
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

a. Identify the possible sources of geothermal energy;

b. State the advantages and disadvantages of using

geothermal energy; and

c. Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for

human use.
Energy from the Volcano

Ø According to the
Department of Energy, 14.4% of
the country’s total power
generation is produced from
geothermal energy.
What is Geothermal
Energy?
GEO – means “ Earth”
THERME – means “ Heat”

Heat from the Earth

Ø Geothermal energy
is a form of
renewable energy
produced by heat
from the earth.
Sources of Geothermal Energy
1. Geysers

Geysers use heat

from deep underground to
heat water, as the water is
heated steam forms,
pressure builds up and the
geyser erupts.

2. Hot Spring

Hot springs are

heated by geothermal
heat- heat from the
Earth’s interior.
Sources of Geothermal Energy
3. Volcano and Fumaroles
Volvano are the rock (magma) in
the earth’s crust that drives volcanic
eruptions can also provide heat for
electricity generation.

Fumaroles are also geothermal features

that depend on the interaction of
released volcanic gases and the local
groundwater system.
Geothermal energy is generated in two ways.

Total: 9 Geothermal Power Plants..

5 Steps to generate electricity using geothermal
power plant:

1. Wells are drilled deep into the earth to pump steam or hot
water to the surface.
2. When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure
causes the water to turn into steam.
3. The steam spins a turbine, which is connected to a
generator that produces electricity.
4. Cooling tower cools the steam which it condenses back
to water.
5. The cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin
the process again.
Geothermal energy Heat Pumps

Use the heat coming from close to the earth’s surface to heat
water or provide heat for buildings.
Advantages and
disadvantages of using
Geothermal energy
Advantages
• Geothermal energy does not produce any pollution,
and does not contribute to the greenhouses effect.
• The stations do not take up much room, so there is not
much impact on the environment.
• No fuel is needed.
• Once you’ve built a geothermal power station, the
energy is almost free.
Disadvantages
• There are not many places that you can build a
geothermal power station.
• You need hot rocks of a suitable type, at a depth
where we can drill down to them.
• Sometimes a geothermal site may not run out of
steam, perhaps for decades.
• Hazardous gases and minerals may come up
from underground, and can be difficult to safety
dispose of.s
