CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The infrastructure and technological innovations into countries have always

been the adversaries and blessing opportunities for socio economic and political life

of human beings. Every technological innovation has been a topic of debate and

centre of researchers’ attention and same is the case with the development of social

networking sites. Various researchers have conducted studies to pinpoint the several

impacts of these sites on their users and findings suggested both bright and dark

aspects. Hence, many countries gained open access to the Internet due to rapid

advances in information technology within last twenty years (Kuppuswamy&

Narayan, 2010).In fact, the Worldwide Web, originally created in 1990 for US

military forces, has become not only an effective instrument for the management of

US army, but later a convenient tool that issued by civilians for communication,

entertainment, and learning purposes. One of the most popular and recognized

platforms used on the Internet are social networking sites such as Facebook.

Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million

active users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4, 2004, when a

19-year-old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the

revolutionary site to connect Harvard University students (Grossman, 2010). But

later, this site allows users to build social networks with hundreds or even thousands

of people around the world of which university students, high school students and also

the elementary pupils are the primary demographics using Facebook, with features

such as photos, wall posts, and status updates becoming seemingly irresistible to those

who want to connect with their friends. Though this social network generates billions

of dollars for the developer and assists to contact a relatives detached for long period

1
of time within fraction of seconds, it has impact on the users in general and on pupils’

academic performance in particular.

Most of the students don’t realize the negative effects impacts of Facebook on

their life. The main reason is because they are already addicted to it.This addiction can

lead to several negative developments. The main purpose of this paper is to suggest

some ways of minimizing the bad impacts of Facebook to elementary pupil and to

show you the negative effects of this social lnetworking sites on students’

performance. This research also focuses on finding ways to enhance students’

motivation and improve their achievements, yet without looking closely at the sources

for their demotivation or academic failure.

Social media may define as the mutual and online communications channel

dedicated to community-based contribution, communication, content distribution and

cooperation. Purpose animated to discussion, micro blogging, communal networking,

social book marking, and wikis are amongst the diverse kinds of social media.

(Kaplan &Haenlien, 2012)

Social media sites have given a stage where the youth can produce groups

and pages stands on their ordinary regulation and end up constructing relations and

chances for their personal careers by keep informed a variety of topics to talk about.

Youth who have been meeting said that social media has turn into their standard of

living and it makes their lives easy fast and efficient. (Swist, 2015)

Social networks are also used for educational purposes as an amount of people

are linked with these websites and if you have a question about your lesson, you can

link with your teachers or whoever relevant people in the world which will give you

answer of your questions. Social Medias are also used for sharing information.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

2
This survey seeks to answer the following questions, specifically:

1) Is Facebook useful for grade school pupils, or does it simply distracts them?

2) Is there negative effect of Facebook on grade school pupils academic

performance?

3) Why the grade school pupils are getting addicted to Facebook?

4) Does logging on for a long time Facebook affects their grades?

5) Is there anyway grade school pupils can minimize their time logging on

Facebook?

1.3 Scope and Delimitation

Grade 5 students use Facebook for many reasons some of them considers it

the method to communicate with their friends (including old friends or current

friends). Some agree, that it helps them to relax in stressful situations, some user

argues that it is a distraction in their studies. To illustrate, some introvert person don’t

socialize with other people but after Facebook is been introduce to them, they became

addicted to it in a span of time. They spend most of their time to chat, to post, to play

games, to stalk and to watch videos. These introvert person turns into a sociable

person.

This research will help grade school students to gain knowledge about the

role of Facebook in their lives, and also the effects of using Facebook to the academic

performance of grade school students. This research will benefit the readers to

determine the Facebook whether it is good or bad in the academic performance of the

grade school. Furthermore, this research will also focus to the advantage and

disadvantage.

The focus of this study is limited with grade school who maintained a

Facebook account and its impact on their academic performance. The main purpose of

3
this research is for the effects of Facebook using to the academic performance of

grade school pupil. This research is limited to Facebook alone. We focus on the

effects of Facebook on the grade school student in Dilausan Elementary School

(DES), with regardless to their gender (boys and girls), age ranges 10 to 13 years old.

1.4 Significance of the study

The result of this survey would benefit the following:

1.4.1Students.This study plays an important role in our grade school pupil

especially those who don't know yet the limitation between academic studies and

social network (Facebook). This study would provide information on the impacts of

Facebook to students and how it can be used in relation to their academics

performance. Most of the students who use Facebook during class time help them

deals with the boredom they experience in class but this will led to lower grades, they

are not giving more attention on what is important. And sometimes student welcome

online engagement and resources, like half of them said they'd like to do some online

collaboration for class, in fact. And that's what advance technology brings us now. In

addition, this study will help students to manage their time properly, to focus on

academic works, to ignore negative effects of facebook and maybe to help students

decrease the negative effects of it.

1.4.2 Teachers. The study will guide the teachers on what to do with the

student that is addicted on Facebook. The teachers will be able to understand on why

some students are having low grades just because of Facebook and later on, help

them.

1.4.3 Parents. Like the teachers, the parents too will understand why their

children having a bad performance and having a low grades. This study will help

4
them formulate some preventive measures to help their sons or daughters from

obsession to Facebook. The findings will also help them learn the actions of their

children.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

2.2 Related Studies

Social-networking sites are the latest online communication tool that allows

users to create a public or private profile to interact with people in their

networks(Boyd & Ellison, 2008). The extremely popular social network site for

students in different levels.Facebook, has already created a tremendous impact on

their lives. The site can be used towards work- related contexts, business,

relationships commencement and connecting those with shared interests. Members

may use the site to mingle with people they already know offline and find new

friends. Facebook allow its users to present themselves in an Internet profile, build up

“friends” who can post comments on each other’s wall and view each other’s page.

They can also upload photos and tag their friends. Also, they can mention their friends

in a certain “meme post”.

Facebook associates can also join groups based on common interest, see what

things they have or know in common, and learn each other’s page. Example of this

are

But what are behind these facts? What does Facebook bring to the lives of

members especially the Elementary Pupils (10-13yrs.old)? How does Facebook affect

their life as a elementary pupil?

According to research, Facebook has an impact to pupils. Some of them use it

for educational purposes. They would like to do some online collaboration with

classmates. Also, teacher sometimes would assign their students to have a campaign

in Facebook & etc.It is stated that using Facebook boost their self-esteem even more.

Trough Facebook they show more interest creating their projects because they can

6
plan any time without meeting personally. They would feel belongingness in the

community composed to those who do not have account. It also provides news on

what are happening in the real world and even in their school campuses or the school

they last attended. On the other hand negative effects flourish. This are Lacks

emotional connection,Lack of body language communication,Promotes laziness and

lastly it formed a new kind of addiction which we called the “Social Media

Addiction” and it is quite true in using Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook?

Some would say yes and some would say no. It depends on the level of cravings. But

in the recent study, it was found that a lot of elementary pupil are now addicted to it,

to the extent that their academic performance is affected.

“Children who spend much of their time online find it harder to focus in class

and have short attention span” researcher found the samples that 7 out of 10 teachers

believed that their student are becoming obsessed with social media sites such as

Facebook. Their student tend to study while using Facebook and it shows that they

got 20% lower grades. Facebook – using pupils even perform task without

completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down on their newsfeed

to see updates and trends rather than finishing their school tasks. Aside that

theFacebook affects students’ academic performance; it has also an effect on their

emotional health. Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards their

enemy in school or outside the campus. They would blurt out through posting status

that would target their opponent just to hurt their feelings and to give revenge.

Facebook chats and post would make them busy nowadays. They may be

connected to many people but they somehow disconnect with important aspects of

their lives and one of those is education. The belief of meeting people face to face

7
seems very odd. They prefer to send and receive instant messages or post messages

through Facebook.

2.2 Review of Related Literature

According to Wasta Fari (2010), Facebook is one of the most famous

websites since its continued use. Not being able to cope with the benefits, it brings to

enabling different types of individuals, including the various immersive abilities that

can be done here is the fact that you can make a virtuous person to meet new friends

but when it comes to the truth that a person can make a fake account to harm someone

else, it is very fraudulent to everyone's attention for security. In observing students,

Fari learned that students who are completely obsessed with Facebook lose their

homework because of the big time they spend on it. He also said that the time the

student was using in the Facebook was enough to deplete the extra-curricular

activities at school. However, the perspective of presenting these effects is that a

student is responsible for the proper use of his friendship time, participation in extra-

curricular activities, read and homework assignments.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes and discusses how the researchers will gather the

necessary data and information that will be useful in the entire study. It describes who

will be the respondents and focus of the research. This also shows the procedure of

data collection and instruments used; these chapters also discuss the type of research,

research method, and the research locale where the study will be conducted.

3.1 Research Method

The proponents have used the Descriptive Research Method which involves

gathering data to obtain information regarding or concerning the current situation and

then organize, tabulate, depict and describe the data. Under the Descriptive Research

Method, the researchers gathered information of the current system through survey.

With the survey method, the researchers are able to gather data on the behavior,

practices, attitudes, opinions, interest and perceptions of the users on the existing and

the proposed system, and then such data is analyzed, organized and interpreted. This

method will be appropriate for the studies basis and subject that is being focused

3.2 Subject of the Study

The subjects of this data were drawn from30 students of grade 5 pupils under

the advisory of ma’am of DES (Dilausan Elementary School)

The respondents of the study include the elementary pupils of ICCS through

random wherein the proponents prepare a set of carefully prepared and logically

10
ordered questions. This respondent focuses on the usage of social media or Facebook

and how it affects their academic performance for they are very important in a sense

that this study is all about them.

The researcher used Sloven’sformula in order to get the number of respondent.

e= 0.05 N= number of the respondents n=total students of grade 5

N=n/1+ne2

N=30/1+30(0.05)2

N=30/1.075

N=27.90= 28

In selecting the respondents, the researcher used kth method to avoid bias.

Kth=1+3.322 log N

= 1+ 3.322 (log 28)

=5.80 = 6 in a row will be choosen until the total 28 respondent will be fulfill .

3.3 Description of Research Instruments

The easiest and fastest way of gathering information is through questionnaire.

According to Calderon and Gonzales (1993), a questionnaire is a set of question

which, when answered properly by required number of properly selected respondents,

will supply the necessary information to complete a research study.

3.3.1Questionnaire.A pre-written series of questions used in gathering

important information’s from one or more persons. This will be given to the

individual who have a direct bearing of the study and in order to satisfy the

proponent’s goal that is to get and measure the opinions, polls and attitude of the

respondents of the study.

3.4 Statistical Treatment

The following statistical tool were used in the study:

11
3.4.1Frequency (or absolute frequency) of an event is the number of times the event

occurred in an experiment or study. These frequencies are often graphically

represented in histograms.

3.4.2 Percentage-means “per hundred” of the symbol used to express percentage is

%. One percent (or or 1%) is one hundredth of the total or whole and is therefore

calculated by dividing the total or whole number by 100.

The researcherused a Percentage formula in interpreting the gathered data from

questionnaire.

P = Percentage of the answer from the number of respondent

x = number of answered by the respondents

N= total numbers of respondents

Formula:

P(%)= x/N * 100
