Factors define Power Quality

• Frequency Events
Change of the supply frequency outside
tolerance. Due to rotational speed of the
power station generators
Frequency variation – very rare

• Voltage Events
Change of the supply voltage outside

• Waveform Events
Distortion in Waveforms

Capacitor

Capacitor is a part of Electrostatics (also known as Static

Electricity), a branch of physics that deals with the forces
exerted by a static (i.e. unchanging) electric field upon
charged objects. Electrode
Electrostatics involves the build-up of charge in objects
due to contact between (generally) non-conductive
surfaces. These charges are generally built up through the Dielectric System
flow of electrons from one object to another. Unit of
Capacitance Farads, C = ε0 εr A
(in a medium) d Electrode
Where,
A = electrode area
d = separation between electrodes
ε0 εr = Absolute permittivity of a
medium

Harmonics
Definition

 Harmonics is a term used to describe the shape or characteristics of voltage or

current waveform with respect to fundamental frequency in distribution system.
 Non linear load generates current harmonics, the harmonic currents are
predominant and the corresponding harmonic voltages are determined by supply /
load impedance at each frequency.
 Fourier analysis- Integral Multiples of fundamental frequency

Harmonics
Non Linear Loads

 Power electronics, converters, drives...

• Rectifiers
• Inverters
• Furnaces...
 Computers
 Printers
 Faxing machines
 Industrial loads (mainly 3-wire systems)
• AC and DC drives (UPS systems)
• Harmonics between phases, imbalance,
sometimes reactive power
• Steel industry – Elec arc Furnaces
 Commercial loads (mainly 4-wire systems)
• All office equipment such as computers,
saving lamps, photocopiers, fax machines, …
• Harmonics in neutral and between phases, imbalance,
sometimes reactive power

Harmonics
Definition

 Non Linear loads – static power converters, arc discharge devices and saturated
magnetic devices.

 Characteristic Harmonics:
Static converters-Set pattern of harmonic currents
H=k q +/-1 : Ih=I1/h
Ex. Rectifier loads-produce odd level of harmonics

 Non characteristic Harmonics:

Produced by asymmetrical delay of firing angle of the converter/imbalance
in power system Ex. Electric arc furnace
Strong source of harmonics with all even & odd harmonics being generated

Harmonics
Effects of Harmonics

Electrical equipment's
 Thermal stress which created more losses
 Insulation stress which damage the electrical equipment
 Mal operation of electronic devices

Transmission system
 Additional power loss caused by increase in the rms value of current.
 Skin and proximity effects are functions of frequency and raise the AC resistance of cable, thus
increasing conduction (I2R) losses.

Capacitor
 Creates “Resonance” & amplification of harmonic current

 XC = 1 / 2πfc (capacitive reactance
