Body electrical system 4 General information and precautions Warning: Before carrying out any work on the electrical system, read through the precautions given in "Safety first!” and in Chapter 5. Tho lectrical system is of 12-volt negative earth type. Power for the lights and all electrical accessories is supplied by 2 lead/acid type battery, whieh \s charged by the alternator This Chapter covers repair and service procedures for the various electrical components nol associated with the engine. Information on the battery, alternator anc starter motor can be found in Chapter 5A, with ignition system details in Chapter 5B. Il should be noted that, prior to working on any component in the el2etrical systom, the battery negative terminal should first be disconnected, to prevent the possibility of ‘electrical short-circuits andor tires. Caution: 1 the radiofeassette player fitted fe one with an antithert security code, ax the standord unit ix, refer to the information given in the Reference Section af this manuad befare disconnecting the battery 2 Electrical fault-finding - general information Note: Refer to the precautions giver in ‘Safety firs!” and in Section 1 of this Chaptor before starting work, The following tests relate to testing of the main electrical circuits, and ‘should not be used to test delicate efactronic circuits (such as anti-lock braking systems), particularly where am electronic controt module is used. General 1 A typical electrical circult consists of an electrical component, any switches, relays, ‘motors, fuses, fusible links or circuit breakers related to that component, and the wiring and connectors which link the component to both ‘the battery and the chassis. To help to pinpoint a problem in an electrical circull Wiring diagrams are included at the end of this Chapter. 2 Botore attempting to diagnose an electrical fault, first study the appropriate wiring diagram, to understand the components included in the particular circuit concerned The possible sources of a fault can be arrowed down by noting If other components related to the circuit are operating properly. If saveral components or circuits fail at ene time, the problem Is likely to be related to a ‘shared fuse ar earth connection. 3 Electrical problems usually stem from simple causes, such as loose or corroded ‘connections, a faulty earth connection, a blown fuse, a melted fusible link, or a faulty rolay (refer to Section 3 for details of testing relays}. Visually inspect the condition of all fuses, wires and connections in a problem circult before testing the components. Use the witing diagrams to determine which terminal cannections will need to be checked, in order to pinpoint the trouble-spot. 4 The basic tocls required for electrical fault- finding include a circuit tester or voltmeter (@ 42-velt bulb with a set of test leads can also be used for certain tests); a solf-powered test light (sometimes known as.a continuity tester): an chmmeter (to measure resistance}; a battery and set of test leads; and a jumper wire, preferably with @ circuit broakor ar fuse Incorporated, which can be used to bypass suspect wires or elecifical components. Before attempting to locale a problem with test instruments, use the wiring diagram to determine where to make the ‘connections. 8 To find the source of an intermittent wiring fault (usually cue to a poor or diry connection, or damaged wiring insulation). a “wiggla” tast can ba performed an the winng, This involves wigaling the wiring by Nand, 10 see the foull ocours as tho wiry ie nnavest Ieeshaulst be passibie ta nartew down the Source of tho fault to a particular section oF ‘wiring. This mathod of testing cut be used i oniuinetion with any of the testy described in ta following sub Sections, G Apart from problems due connections, two besic typ: occur In an alectrical circuit = uper-circult, oF short-oircull 7 Open-circult faults are caused by a break somewhere In the circuit, which prevents current from flowing. An open-ciroult fault will prevent a component from working, but will nol cause the relevant circutt fuse to biow. 8 Short-circut faults are caused by a “short” somewhere in the circuit, which allows the ‘current flowing in the circuit to “escape” along an alternative route, usually to earth. Short- circuit faults are normally caused by a breelkdown in wiring insulation, which allows a feed wire to touch either another wirs, of an ‘earthed component such as the bodyshell. A short-circuit fault will normally cause the relevant circuit fuse to blow. Finding an open-circuit 9 To cheok for an open-circuit, connect one lead of a circuit tester or voltmeter to either the negative battery terminal or a known good arth, 40 Connect the ether lead to a connector in the circuit being tested, preferably nearest to the battary or fuse, 41. Switch on the circuit, bearing in mind that some circuits aro live only when the ignition ‘switch is moved to a particular postion. 42 If voltage is present (indicated either by the tester bulb lighting or a voltmeter reading, as epplicable), this moans that the section of to poor full can the circuit between the relevant connector and the battery is problem-free. 18 Continue to check the remainder of the circuit in tha same fashion. 14 When a point is reached at which ne voltage is present, the problem must le between that point and the previous test point ‘with yoltage. Most prablemss ean be traced ta 1 broken, corroded or loose connection, Finding a short-circuit 15 To check for @ short-circuit, frst disconnect the load{s} from the circuit (beds are the components which drave current from a circuit, such as bulbs, motors, heating elements, ete) 46 Remove the relevant fuse from tho cireu, and connect a circuit tester or voltmeter to the fuse connections. 47 Switch on the circuit, bearing in mind that some circuits are live only when the ignition ‘witch is moved 10 a particular position. 48 If voltage is prasent (indicated elther by the tester bulb lighting or a volimeter reading, as applicable), this means that there is short-circuit. 19 If no voltane is pn blows with the toads) sent, ur the fuse att pannected, this ineestes atone 2. in th Fol Finding eth fault 20 The battery negative terminalis ronnaatied to "earth = the metal of the ‘enginey/ransiniagion unit and the car body land nnost systems gre wit sa that hey ony rebelve a positive feed, the current rekas via the mictal af the car body. This means thet Ue component motinting and the body form part of that circuit. Louse or coroded mountings can thoretore cause a range of Slectrical faut, ranging from total failure of elreut, to a puzzling partial fall. In particu, lights may. shine dimly (especially when another crcult sharing the same earth pom in operation), motors (e.g. wiper motors 0” te radiator coating fan motor) may run siowy, and the operation of one circuit may have apparently-unrelated effect on another. Not thal on many vehicles, earth strape are used batweon certain components, such as the engine/iransmission and the body, usualy there there is no metakto-metal contact between components, due to flexible ruber ‘mountings, ete 24 To check whether a component is properly earthed, disconnect the battery, ard Connect one lead of an ohmmeter to a krow good earth point. Connect the other load tho wire or earth connection being tastod. Tm resistance reading should be 2era; if ne check the connection as follows. 22 If an earth connection is thought to be faulty, dismantle the connection, and clean back to bare metal both the bodyshell an ta wire terminal or tne component. earh connection mating surface. Be careful o remove all traces of dit and corsion, th Use a knife fo trim away any paint, so thata clean metal-to-metal joint is made. Cn Body electrical system 13°5 34 Removing a fuse from the engine ‘compartment fusebox using the tool provided feessembly, tighten the joint fasteners securely; if a wire terminal Is being retitted, se serrated washers between the terminal ind the bodyshell, to ensure a clean and secure connaction. When the connection is remade, prevent the onset of corresion in the future by applying a coat of petroleum jelly or sleone-based grease, or by spraying on (at regular intervals) a proprietary ignition sealer. 3 Fuses and relays - general information Fuses 1 Fuses are designed to freak a circult whon eprecielermined current 1s reached, in orcicr We protect the components and wiring which cel br cargo! by exoBBsive currant flow, ny axcessive current flow will be due lo & ‘atin the oWroukt, usualy & short eet (eee Section 2) 2 The main fuses are located in the fusebox site lower corncr ol the driver's side facia. $ For access to the fuses, turn the securing tip through a quarter-turn, then lower the ‘usebox cover from the facta, 4 Additional fuses are located in the fusebox inthe engine compariment, behind the battery {see lustration). § Ablow fuse can be recognised from ils nltod or broken wire, §To remove a fuse, first ensure that the ‘eevant circuit Is switched off (arrowed) 3.7 Removing a fuse from the main fusebox using the plastic tool 7 Using the plastic tool provided in the fusabox, pull the fuse from Its location (see illustration), 8 Spare fuses are provided in the blank ‘terminal positions in the fusebox. 9 Before renewing a blown fuse, trace and rectify the cause, and always use a fuse of the corrset rating, Never substitute a fuse of a higher rating, or make temporary repairs using wire or metal foil; moro serious damage, or even fre, could result 10 Note that the fuses are colour-coded as follows, Refer to the Specifications for details of the fuse ratings and the eircuts protected: Colour Rating Orange 5A Rect 104 Bue Yetiow Glaar or white Relays 11 Arelay is an electricaty-eparated wile, which is used fr the folowing reasons: ') A relay can switch a heavy curren remotely fom the circuit in which the current is owing, allowing the use of Fighter-gauge wiing and switch contacts. »b) Arelay can recaive more than one contrat input, unlike a mechanicat switch. ©) Arey can have a timar function ~ for fexamale, the intermittent wioerreiay. 42 Most of the relays are located at the rear of the main fusebox (some relays can be reached by opening the fusebox - for access to other relays, it will be necessary to remove the carpet trim panal or the lower facia trim panel ftom the crver's side of the facia). The ear wiper motor relay is located in the tallgate, behing the tailgate trim panol (sce illustration). On some models, additional congine-related relays are located in the engine compartment fuse box behind the battery, 48 a circuit or system controlled by a relay develops a fault, and the relay is suspect, operate the system. If the relay is functioning, it'should be possible to hear it “cick” as itis energised. If this Is the case, the fault es with the components oF sring of the system. Ifthe relay is not being energised, then either the 3.12 Removing the tailgate wiper relay relay le not receiving a main supply or a switching voltage, or the relay itself is faulty. ‘Testing is by the substitution of a known good Unit, but be careful - while some relays are Identical in appearance anc in operation, others look similar but perform different functions, 14 To remove @ relay, first ensure that the relevant ciroult is switched off. General ‘Some models in the range are fitted with an anti-thaft alarm system as standard equipment. The alarm is automatically armed and disarmed using the remote central locking transmitter (where appiicable). When the system is activated, the alarm Indicator light, located on the facia, will flash ‘continuously. In addition to the alarm function, the system also incorporates an engine immobiliser. ‘Additionally, certain models up to January 1998 are fitted with a coded engine immobiliser device, operated by 2 key pad in the centre console, On models from January 1998 onwards, the key pad immobiliser is replaces by a transponder system. Key pad immobiliser Caution: Do not forget the immobiliser code - if the correct cade cannot be entered, the engine management ‘electronic contro! unit must be renewed. This device cuts out the engine management system, and prevents the engine from being started unless a confidential code is keyed into the pad located in the centre console. The code can be chasen by the owner, and full details are given in the vehicle handbook. When the ignition is tumed on, ifthe green light on the key pad is illuminated, the system is net working, and the engine can be started normally. If the red light is tluminated, the system is working (the engine cannot be started, and the alarm wil sound if starting is attempted). To de-activate the system, enter the correct code, which should be confirmed by four flashes from the green light, and four beeps. The rad light should go out, and the engine ccan then be started If the wrong code is entered, the red light will stay on, and the engine cannet be started. Transponder immobiliser The transponder immobiliser fitted from January 1998 onwards cuts the engine management system on petrol engine models, and holds the fuel injection pump stop solenoid closed on diesel models. ‘The system is disarmed when the ignition key is inserted into the ignition switch, as follows. The head of the ignition key contains a transponder micro-chig, and the ignition lock contains @ reader coll. When the key enters the lock, the reader call racognises the signal from the micro-chip, and de-activates tho immobiliser. I is essential thal the special duplicate keys wilt have to be abisinad from a Citron desler, who will nood the coae umber 9 supply a duplicate - any koys cul sawhere will work the door locks, But wilt rot contain the transponder chip necessary lo de-activate the immobiliser and alow the engine to be started. Anti-theft alarm system Note that if the doors are operated using the key, the alarm will not be armed or disarmed (as applicable}. If for some reason the remote central locking transmitter fails whilst the alarm is armec, the alarm can be disarmed using the key. To do this, open the door with the key, then enter the vehicle, noting that the alarm will sound as the door is ‘opanac, and switch on the ignition switch whilst depressing the alarm button, mounted tn the driver's side of the facia, Note that the ignition switch must be turned on and the button depressed within 19 seconds of ‘opening the door. ‘The alarm system has switches on the bonnet, tailgate and each of the doors. it also has ultrasonic sensing, which detects movement inside the vehiclo, via sensors ‘mounted on either side of the vehicle interior. If required, the ultrasonic sensing facity can be switched off, whilst retaining the switched side of the system, To switch off tho Ultrasonic sensing, with the ignition switch off, depress the alarm switch (mounted on the driver's side of the facia) until the alarm indicator light on the facia is continuously li Now, when the doors are locked using the femata central locking transmitter, and the alarm is armed, only the switched side of he alarm system is operational (and the alarr Indicator light vill revert to its flashing mode, ‘This facility is useful, as i allows you to leave the windows/aunroct open, and stil arm te alarm. If the windows/sunroot are iett oper with the ultrasonic sensing not switched of the alarm may be falcoly triggered by a gustet wind, To deactivate the complete alarm system, models up to 1997 have a master switehin ‘the left-hand corer of the engine compartmant, under the scuttle panel. The switch fs operated by a dedicated key, ands protected by a plastic cover. On models ater this date, the alurrn is deactivated by pressing ane holding the alarm switch until the syste LED starts flashing. ‘Should the alarm eystem become faulty, te vehicle should be taken to a Gitroén deal ar ‘examination. Disconnecting the vehicle battery The following precautions should be observed when’ cisconnecting and reconnecting the battery leads on a vetive ‘equipped with an alarm syste Botore disconnecting the hater, dsactivate the siarm siren, as deserbed previously Bo aware when reconnecting the batley, that as soon as the battery fs connected, th ‘alarm will automatically be activated. The purpose of the switch isi prevent fucl spilage in the event of a aceldent. The switch consists of a steal ball mounted Ina conical housing - the steel ball is normaly held in place by a magnet. When an impacto! greater than @g occurs (equivalent to hitting 2 wall at around 15 moh), the switeh activates. (On petrol models, the switch cuts the supe to tho fuel pump relay, while on diesels, te switch activates the injection pump sige solenoid. It is not unknown for these switches to operate in conditions other than in an accident situation - for example, if the car receives a severe enough jolt, the switch might be triggered, leading to the engine suddenly cuiting out. ‘The switch can be roset in the event off operating incorrectly by depressing the pushbutton on top of the switch, This shoud restore normal fuel system operation.
