I. Context and Rationale
The onset of Covid-19 Pandemic has caused drastic change in the
lives of the people globally. It affects not only the people’s lifestyle but as
well as the delivery of the basic services which includes education. This
has opted for the current educational system – the Distance Learning
Modality which Philippines employs.
The Philippines is one of the countries in the world who have not yet
started face to face classes. We are still on its pilot implementation and
only in selected places in the country. Department of Education is one
with the rest of the country in protecting the welfare of the learners as well
as the delivery of its services in utmost quality. The suspension of the
face to face classes is an answer to the government’s call of protecting its
citizen. This poses challenges to the schools particularly the teachers,
students as well as the parents. The Learning Continuity Plan (DepEd
Order 12 s. 2021) of the department implies the important role of the
parents in the delivery of education. In its Annex D, one strategy posted
was to conduct parent-teacher conferences to ensure continuous learning
process.
Maria Cristina High School was implementing the Modular Distance
Learning Modality. Thus for the school year 2021-2022, 3rd quarter
started September 7, 2022. It follows the 8x8 distribution scheme
provided by the Schools Division Office. This scheme was used by the
school to address the gap of the number of modules versus the number of
students. Students were grouped into 8 groups with maximum of 8
students per group. This was implemented due to the lack of modules.
This was the scheme adapted by the three sections of Grade 10
throughout the school year. Through Division Memorandum 223 series of
2021, Iligan City Division, provide guidelines in monitoring and tracking of
the learners’ performance. In the said Division Memorandum, all districts
are to monitor students’ performance with their grades. This was also the
response to DepEd Order 30, series of 2021, which also set the standards
for students’ assessment and evaluation during pandemic.
On the ongoing implementation of this scheme during the first and
second quarter of the said school year, problems occur such as limited
number of modules are to be used; poor tracking of the learners’ progress
through advisers that led to insufficiency of output submitted by the
parents in all subjects; and lastly, advisers cannot provide accurate
feedback on the learners’ output and parents’ concerns on a specific
learning area. The aforementioned problems encountered made the
researchers come up with a simplified approach in guiding the 8x8
scheme on module distribution and retrieval to ensure the proper tracking
of learner’s output and leading to increase of parents’ engagement and
learners’ academic performance.
II. Innovation, Intervention and Strategy
The purpose of this innovation is to provide solution to the problems
encountered by the teachers and parents in their child’s learning process.
This will allow parents to closely monitor their child’s academic
performance systematically.
This action research will use a teacher-made monitoring card that
serves as a mechanism to enhance the distribution and retrieval of
module and to intensify the monitoring of the learners academic progress
through the use of the Learner’s SLM Quarterly Monitoring Card.
Figure 1. Learner’s Self-Learning Modules Quarterly Monitoring Card
Figure 1 shows the tool to be used by the parents and teachers in
tracking the module distribution and retrieval of all subjects, with
additional information on the level of accomplishments targeted in each
subject successfully completed.

Figure 2 shows the processes involve in this action research from pre-
implementation to post-implementation. It also shows the sources of data
gathered during the pre implementation and data to be interpreted by the
researchers upon post implementation.
III. Action Research Questions
The study will seek to increase the level of academic performance of
the Grade 10 learners who are at risk of dropping out through parent
engagement. It will specifically answer the following research questions.
1. What are the levels of academic performance of the learners
before implementation of Learner’s SLM Quarterly Monitoring
Card?
2. What are the levels of academic performance of the learners after
implementation of Learner’s SLM Quarterly Monitoring Card?
3. Is there a significant difference in the level of academic
performance of the learners before and after implementation of
Learner’s SLM Quarterly Monitoring Card?
4. What action plan can be proposed to provide sustainability and
efficacy in implementing the Learner’s SLM Quarterly Monitoring
Card?
IV. Action Research Methods
This study will utilize mixed research obtaining quantitative data on
learners’ level of academic performance before and after
implementation, learners’ progress in terms of attendance. While
qualitative data will be taken from the teacher’s Focus Group
Discussion (FGD) before and after implementation, and parent’s
feedback after the implementation.
a. Participants and/ or other Sources of Data and Information
The research locale of this action research is one of the public schools
in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, Region X, Philippines. The
respondents will be the Grade-10 learners of quarter 3 and 4 of school
year 2021-2022. This research will use the purposive sampling
method.
b. Data Gathering Methods
The following data gathering methods will be used in this study:
1. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) – This will be used by the
researcher to get feedback as to the academic performance of
the Grade 10 learners on the first and second quarter in their
respective learning area.
2. Leaner’s Self Learning Modules Quarterly Monitoring Card –
This card will be used by the parents to closely monitor their
child’s performance and to have a smooth process in the
Module distribution and retrieval.
3. Attendance Sheet – This will be used to gather the data as to
the attendance of the respondents from quarter 1 to quarter 4.
4. Master Grading Sheets – These will be used to obtain the data
as to the significant difference of the respondents’ level of
performance before and after implementation.
c. Data Analysis Plan
The study will use the following data analysis:
1. For qualitative data taken from Focus Group Discussion
(FGD), the researcher will use the thematic analysis.
2. Descriptive Statistics such as mean and rank will be used in
determining the level of academic performance before and
after implementation.
3. For statistical treatment, Dependent T-test will be used to treat
the significant difference in the level of academic performance
of the respondents before and after implementation.

stakeholders of the school during school- based LAC sessions, parents-
teachers meeting, school management committee meeting, district and
division research forums.
The findings of the study will be utilized in formulating school policies
to intensively track and monitor the learning of the students and in
providing interventions to bridge the gaps for learners who missed
