History of Design 1 Theory (2 Hours)

MidTerm Exam Due 2/1/2022

This exam aims to test your understanding of the covered topics during the first 2 months of
the course. Also aims to give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge by reading and
researching more about these covered topics.

Answer the following essay question:

1. The Industrial Revolution was a turning point in history that affected every aspect in life. Discuss
its importance and the changes it brought to the society focusing on its effects on Art & design?
(5 marks)

2. Art Nouveau was a short living movement but with great achievments in all fields of design.
Discuss why it didn’t survive for a long time? and how these reasons are related to its designs’
characteristics. give examples analyze and discuss. (5 marks)

3. Art Nouveau was related to another movement in europe called “Vienna Secession”. research
and discuss this movement and clarify the relationship between the two. what are the similarities
and differences in their approach in art and design? (5 marks)

4. Research and discuss the defining characteristics of the Renaissance period? provide examples of
art and design works with analysis. (5 marks)

5. Research and discuss John Ruskin’s ideas and philosophy in relation to art and society and how
his ideas fueled the emergence of Arts & Crafts movement? (5 marks)

6. Choose a work of art from the prehistoric past or the earliest civilizations such as the river cultures
of the ancient world. Discuss how the work is a reflection of the ancient culture that created it.
(5 marks)

• bring a printed copy to lecture on monday.

• Line and paragraph spacing: 1.0
• citation is very important, make sure to state all references.
• make sure to employ essay writing skills in answering these questions
• your answer shouldnt exceed 300 works.
• support your answers with photos and examples
• use sketching skill to support your analysis
• prepare a visually acceptable report

• in order to answer these essay questions you have to study the lectures and search more
information from the listed references below or the internet.
• make sure to read and understand before writing your answer in your own words
• if any plagirism is noticed a zero will be given.
• also if any copy from each other is noticed both students get a zero.
