Interracial Marriage
Interracial marriage is a form of marriage outside a specific social group involving
spouses who belong to different races or racialized ethnicities. Interracial marriages can include
combination of White, Blacks, Asians, and any other groups. In Indonesia, interracial marriage
can be a combination of Jawa, Dayak, Bali, Sunda, and many more. However, when there is a
talk about interracial marriage, the first thing that comes to mind usually is a marriage between
White and Black.
Interracial marriage between Black and White has undergone a sharp increase since the
90’s. However, people still being skeptical about it. One of the reasons being interracial marriage
means merging two different beliefs and value system. Different beliefs and value system in
relationship can easily cause conflict that could lead to divorce. This usually happens in
interracial marriage because Black does not carry the same belief as White people do. Romano
(2003) explained that White people subconsciously believe that they are superior to people of
other races, especially black. Luory (2002) also added that Black people have a distinct racial
disadvantage in our society than a Native Americans.
Another reason why people is still skeptical about interracial marriage is because of racial
stereotyping. It is natural to assume something from someone. For example, it is easy to assume
that black people are always crack addict, or drug dealers. With this kind of stereotype, white
spouses will easily make their black partners feel offended. This will cause prejudice and conflict
in the long-term relationship. Marx (2019) added that repeated experiences with stereotype threat
may lead to greater attrition among individuals who are targeted by the stereotype.
Even if an interracial couple can go through all of disadvantages that were mentioned
above, their children will still face racism and discrimination. Mixed race people experienced a
lot more discrimination because of their racial background. They usually become a subject to
slurs or jokes, and being treated unfairly in some institution. For example, the first Black
president of United States, Barrack Obama, is not actually black, but a mixed race between
White, European-American mother, and a Black, Kenyan father. Before becoming a president, he was
often insulted, made fun of, and was not respected at all. Mixed race children from interracial couple will
frequently face this kind of harassment.
An interracial relationship is where there is marriage, sexual or romantic relations
between individuals of different races. Even though interracial relationship becoming more
common these days, people are still skeptical to it mainly because different beliefs and social
value system, stereotyping, and also the risk of having mixed race kid.
