Earth's Life-Supporting Characteristics

This document outlines an activity to identify and describe Earth's characteristics that support life. Students are instructed to identify 3 characteristics from their readings: 1) Earth is at the right distance from the sun, allowing for a livable temperature; 2) The ozone layer protects from UV radiation; and 3) Earth has the right atmospheric conditions and elements to support life. Students then describe each characteristic and answer questions about what would happen without each one and which humans can directly impact.

1. What makes life so rare in the universe? Explain.

It’s because it requires energy, carbon, liquid water, and various other elements. These are
what we needed in order for us to find life in the universe. Who knows there might be other
planets that have the same qualities that Earth has. There are plenty of reasons why life is rare
because life itself is complicated. There are plenty of requirements in order for life to exist.

2. Which among the Earth’s characteristics can humans have direct impact? Explain.

from the sun or too near we might be dead now because if you change one in the solar system
it can cause distortion of the universe which also affects us.
