Instructional Objectives:

● By the end of class, students will demonstrate how to play the low and high drum parts
on their drum with teacher assistance.

General Objectives

● Continue to develop respect for instruments through class discussion


● Learn about the musical instruments of Africa
● Improve on the echo and question / Answer patterns through different rhythms and
phrases.

Materials:

● Drums
● Glock
● Egg Shakers

Opening/Introduction Activity
Review

● T: Ask S what they remember from last week


● S: mention following aspects from last class
○ Respecting the drums/each other
○ How to play high and low tones
○ Alt hands
○ Bouncing off

Learning Opportunities/Procedure:

Echo 1

● Review open tones


○ Play on thigh

Echo 2

● Review and dive into playing high and low tones


○ Play 2 beat patterns
○ Have students close their eyes and raise their hand once they hear a high/low
tone played.
○ Facilitate alternating hands

Question and Answer

● Create different questions


○ Practice with voice only - voice and drum - drumming only
○ SHADOW DRUMMING
■ S hover over head and practice answers
○ Shakers
● Class answer with country in Africa
○ Project Africa on board with labeled countries

Ensemble 1

● Teach class Low Drum part


○ Echo T
○ Facilitate “hands off” on the rests
○ Ask for couple volunteers to play solo
● Teach High Drum part
○ Echo T
○ Explain how it fits in to the low part
○ Ask for volunteers to play solo
● Split the class
○ Divide class in 2 and assign parts
○ Group 1-low part
○ Group 2-high part
○ Switch

Closing Activity

Jam Session

● Finish class by playing a backing track of African drumming and jam out!!

Specific Differentiation Strategies:

● Assign rhythms to words and phrases for interpretation.


● Model with drum head tilted towards the class for visual assistance.

Assessment:

● Be observant in students respect for the drums and each other


● Did the students do well in taking turns
● Individual and group playing assessment
○ Students will play alone and in a group during class
● Execution of the echo patterns
