Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the TLE 10 – Technical Drafting Module on Drafting

Structural Layout and Details using CAD!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use

this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Structural Layout and Details using CAD!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while
being an active learner.

the lesson.

Posttest - This measures how much you have learned

from the entire module.
6

Upon completion of this lesson, you are expected to:

• enumerate different structural materials and components;
• identify the different structural terms; and
• appreciate the importance of different structural components.

LESSON
LESSON 4: DRAFTING STRUCTURAL LAYOUT AND DETAILS USING CAD
LO4.1 DRAFT FOUNDATION PLAN

LO4.1.1 DEFINITION OF STRUCTURAL TERMS

8

DEFINITION OF STRUCTURAL TERMS

Column is a structural shaft of concrete, masonry, metal or timber which
transfers applied vertical loads through its length to its base.

Concrete is a composite material composed of fine and coarse aggregate

bonded together with a fluid cement (cement paste) that hardens (cures) over
time. Concrete is made up of three basic components: water, aggregate (rock,
sand, or gravel) and Portland cement.
Concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings,
consisting of a flat, horizontal surface made of cast concrete. Steel-
reinforced slabs, typically between 100 and 500 mm thick, are most often
used to construct floors and ceilings.
Dead Load is fixed (structure weight)

Environmental Load – wind, rain, flood.

Floor beam is a beam which is the direct support of the floor load of a
building and transfers this load to the adjacent girders or columns.

Footing is a portion of the foundation of a structure which directly distributes

the weight of a building over large area.
Footing Tie Beam is also called as plinth beam that distributes wall load to
the soil. Least cross-sectional dimension of 20mm x 35mm.

Foundations is the foundation that carries the load of the building.

Foundation Bed refers to the soil or rock directly beneath the footing.

Foundation walls the function of which is to support the load of the building
above the ground line and to transmit the weight of the house to the footing.
Lateral ties are used in columns where the load is carried by the vertical steel
bars while the ties are provided to keep the bars in their required position
without getting disturbed while compacting the concrete by the needle
vibrators.
Live Load weight load of the occupants.

Masonry is the building of structures from individual units, which are often
laid in and bound together by mortar.

Piers and Columns are vertical members usually made of concrete, brick,
steel, or wood. They are used to support the floor systems and can be used as
sole support of the structure.

Reinforced concrete, a concrete in which steel is embedded in such a

manner that the two materials act together in resisting forces.
9

Reinforced concrete (RC), also called reinforced cement concrete (RCC),

is a composite material in which concrete's relatively low tensile
strength and ductility are counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement
(steel rods, bars, or mesh absorbs the tensile, shear) having higher tensile
strength or ductility.

Roof beam is a load-bearing member that is integral to the strength of the

building. It supports the floor or roof above while adding integrity to walls.

Slab on grade is a slab built on the ground(grade) or slightly dug in so the

top is at lowest even with the surrounding ground.

Slab on fill is made on a layer of fill, either sand broken stone, masonry or
concrete to raise the desired top level without using excessive amounts of
concrete or asphalt.

Stirrups refers to a closed loop of reinforcement bar and is used to define the
transverse reinforcement provided in beams where the primary mode of load
transfer is through bending and shear.
10

A. Directions: Enumeration.

Enumerate at least three (3) environmental load that may affect the
integrity of the structure.

1. ______________________________
2. ______________________________
3. ______________________________

Give at least four (4) materials used in making piers and columns.

4. ______________________________
5. ______________________________
6. ______________________________
7. ______________________________

Give four examples of reinforced concrete reinforcement materials.

8. ______________________________
9. ______________________________

10.______________________________
11.______________________________

Enumerate the three components of concrete?

12.______________________________
13.______________________________
14.______________________________
11

Give some insights on the importance of the different structural components

discussed in this module?

___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

We already know that a structure should be complete with different structural

component to establish a strong foundation. In the family, each member plays
a role to make the family stronger, what role do you play? Explain.
