Executive Summary

The fundamental goal of this project is to provide an idea for the elderly that will assist them
improve their quality of life in this fast-paced environment. This assignment's stated idea is to
create a suitable system or application. Idea generation approaches are used after identifying the
problem in order to produce an idea for resolving such challenges. Because the concept has been
proposed with descriptions and features, it is required to evaluate the concepts to see if the
suggested ideas are accepted and consented to by the community. As a result, many idea
assessments are used to check each design before proceeding with the assessment. In addition to
examination, marketing plans for freshly suggested concepts must be planned.

Introduction

Fintake is the name of the company that was founded by only 1 member who is Lee Koon Seng.
The Fintake is an IT software company established in October 2021, it provides food intake
suggestions for elder people who had health issues and require some food intake plans to reduce
the burden on the body’s digestive system. The Fintake target audient is for elder people and some

Problem Analysis – impact and consequences of the problem

Today, there are more and more elderly people or people who have health problems due to
excessive intake of certain foods. Because their bodies cannot effectively decompose, their food
intake should be controlled by reducing sugar, salt, and fatty foods. For example, the glycolytic
function of diabetic patients is relatively weak. Hence, diet intake control is helping them to
prevent the over intake by some specific ingredient, food or fruit. Although fruit is common health
for people, however elderly people with or without health problems also need to prevent foods
related to excessive sugar such as the grapefruit can interact with certain medications, which can
result in serious side effects.
According to Nutrition Concerns for Aging Populations states, as people age, their metabolism
slows and their energy needs drop, all of which indicates they require fewer calories. Because of
the impact of food intake on health, maintaining a nutrient-dense diet is vital for elderly
people. (Forum, n.d.) Healthy eating for elderly people is important to maintain a good health
status in their body, as shown in (Esther Ellis, 2021). As a person gets older, eating a variety of
foods from all food categories can help them get the nutrients they need. Fruits, vegetables, whole
grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy are all part of a balanced diet.

Additionally, the findings reveal that by 2035, Malaysia will be a country with an ageing
population. Malnutrition among the elderly is on the rise in Malaysia, owing to a progressive
increase in the prevalence of malnutrition among the elderly. Many people are concerned about
how to effectively control their food in order to prevent malnutrition. (Ahmad et al., 2021)

Therefore, the app helps monitor the elderly to record food intake and calculate the daily intake to
ensure that they do not exceed the required food intake. Moreover, the major food allergens like
milk, eggs, peanuts will affect the symptoms of food allergy might become a serious problem such
as difficulty swallowing or wheezing of breath. Within this problem that can prevent these food
allergens or minimize the cases that happened is monitor health for food intake application help
them to trace diet habits or list up food allergens item. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2021)

Idea Generation
Idea generation is the creative process or technology used by companies to provide answers to
various questions. It requires generating several ideas in a group debate, picking the greatest one
or more ideas, working hard to develop strategies for implementing the concept, and finally putting
the ideas into practice. Concepts may be physical, such as things you can touch or see, or they may
be abstract, such as symbolic or cultural things. In addition, the generation of ideas allows you to
expand the scope of your ideas beyond the scope of your current thinking, and our mentality will
contain more questions or problems before starting the business process.

Idea Generation Method 1 - Fishbone

Fishbone diagrams are as known as cause-and-effect diagram diagrams, are used to identify
possible causes of problems and track the causes of defects and changes. For our Fintake
company, the fishbone diagram is a good brainstorming idea generation technology, which
makes it easier to find solutions.

Idea Summary

According to the (figure 5), it describes the problem in Malaysia is the people in the elderly
don’t have a good plan for their food intake and a guideline to follow. To overcome the problem
of the food pyramid guideline is difficult with other western countries as their research results
show, to identify a well personal food plan for food intake and display the accurate food
ingredient to ensure they won’t over intake some ingredients that are harmful to their health
status. Based on the traditional diary diet record is not efficient for old people where they
sometimes might not memorize the exact food intake, so the idea of applying in the cases
would help elderly within an application reminding eating on time, record on diet as an image
format to replace the traditional diet record method.

Competitor Analysis
The first rival is MyFitnessPal, a smartphone and online program that tracks fitness and diet
records. This application uses gamification features to drive users, and they scan barcodes of
various food products or manually search the food item in a pre-existing database. This app is free
to use with in-app purchases and requires no payment to join up for a free account, but it does
demand certain tools to become a member in order to utilize it. Under Armor acquired this
application in 2015 and discontinuing the Endomondo platform.

Furthermore, the second rival is called Myplate calorie counter, which is an application that assists
all individuals in making educated health decisions, this application is ideal for those who are
through a weight loss program since MyPlate makes tracking calories and getting the proper
nutrition easy. This company's viewership in the United States, which has 32 million monthly
viewers, has also won several honors.

Although two competitors have similar function for user track their food intake and exercise record

Product Concept Description

The idea I would like to propose in this system application is a food intake monitoring
application that the product concept is using the artificial intelligence technique based on
machine learning to develop a database that store food data included ingredient, calories, photo
for recognizing food item apply food recognition API to identify the food items uploaded or
typed by the user through smart devices such as smartphones or tablet scanning and camera
technology, find and record food intake and display food ingredients to notify the user of some
alert message through this proposed idea to track and monitor the diet logs.

First of all, it is difficult for the elderly with vision impairments to utilize the smartphone
keypad to enter the name of the meal to record their dietary intake. Moreover, based on the
(Rusin, Arsand, & Hartvigsen, 2013) article states the nutritional monitoring is a way for
determining the factors that influence one's health. Keeping a dietary log, on the other hand,
can be challenging for patients, but in circumstances when food recognition technology is used,
it can identify food items and record them in the dietary log, saving time and complication for
the elderly. Indeed, the machine learning technique used in this proposed idea may not be a
suitable start for recognizing the food item because the database lacks sufficient data to make
it easy for the user to record and identify it. However, manual user input for diet records makes
it difficult to determine the weight of food, therefore we believe that by implementing this
proposed idea, we will be able to determine the weight of food more correctly, making diet
records more efficient and effective.

As figure 3 shown above, is a food saliency map that made food image recognize by deep learning
technique apply for identifying the food item which implements by the school of information
systems Singapore management university. As we know that deep learning requires a big data size
to measure the food item, while it also relates to the GPU performance processing the calculation.
According to the FOOD Ai deep learning technique, we propose this idea to recognize the food
item and get this way to capture the food ingredient, nutrition, and calories. (Figure 4)

Market Identification
To promote the idea of developing a food intake monitor application that would make it easier for
the elderly to keep track of their food intake, follow their eating patterns, and receive diet
recommendations in order to enhance their health. For some elderly people with vision difficulties,
the user interface must be straightforward to use and allow them to increase text size in various
scenarios. The Android operating system, similarly, has two user interfaces: the default UI and the
simple UI.
1. Product packaging
Product packaging is one of the marketing strategies. In terms of the product, packaging is the act
of designing and creating paper for a product, such as a software application icon that shows the
initial eye impression. Consumers usually glance at the icon before installing the application and
assess whether or not to install it. As a result, a great icon design can help with a variety of
marketing methods. A good product is a software application that is upgradable, meaning that it
can be maintained by a developer in order to expand functionality or correct flaws. Furthermore,
testing becomes the most significant technique before the official launch to limit the number of
bugs discovered or to maintain any work flowing smoothly.
2. Price Range
The next marketing strategy is to set the price range of the application. According to online
research results, there will be many dietary intake monitoring applications whose pricing methods
are free and in-app purchase. This is because free users can increase the number of users and have
a 30-day trial of specific features for free, and during the trial period, cancellation of the
subscription will receive a 100% refund. Basically, free apps are more attractive to the elderly, but
some functions are not available. Pricing will be divided into 3 ways to become a VIP user role,
such as 1 month (RM 10), 6 months (RM 30) and 1 year (RM 50) to enjoy more feature promotions.
3. Promotion
Additionally, promotion is the most major element of any marketing strategy. We can see this in
every product, particularly in new-to-market products or applications, because a successful
promotion can pique customers' interest in the product/application. As a result, while the new
product is unpromoted, it may not be fully trusted by the elderly or other users. To address this
issue, hiring a celebrity to produce an online campaign, such as some advertising, might boost
popularity and trust.

A.P.U Level 2 Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation 202108

BM006-3-2-CRI Assignment Page 15 of 27

4.Specific location strategy

Move to a specific location strategy, because the proposed idea is an application that allows seniors
or others to install it in any location. However, most people may not know that there is this software,
so in subway stations, shopping malls can help them reach potential customers or users. A busy
city like Kuala Lumpur is a good location to set up a few stall at Pavilion shopping mall and LRT
& MRT transit station (Hang Tuah Station)
In conclusion the marketing strategy has made an excellent decision for the Fintake company. It
introduces new items to the market and boosts the company's market share of profits. According
to Fintake, the primary marketing methods are necessary for promoting the idea and the product.
The company will be able to attain its aim more quickly.

Idea Evaluation

SWOT analysis
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats are the four components of the SWOT analysis.
SWOT analysis is a basic tool that can assist you in analyzing what your organization does best
right now and establishing a successful future strategy. Also, it exposes company areas that are
holding you back or that your competitors could exploit if you don't defend yourself. Below is the
WOT analysis for the Fintake company to apply the "Deep-learning technology" for food
recognition that helps the elderly have a good environment to monitor their food intake problem.

R (stand for Respondent )

Strengthens

1. There is no need for manual user input to record the food item because the deep
learning AI food technique will recognize food images automatically. (R1)
2. The elderly can use this food recognition technology to reduce the time taken by
inputting and recording the food items, and the diet record requires some technique to
list them down. (R10)
3. The user only needs to take a food photo. The monitoring application will display the
food name, ingredient, and nutrition. (R6)
4. The deep learning AI for food recognition can save time by finding the food name
since the database contains most of the data. (R6)

A.P.U Level 2 Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation 202108

BM006-3-2-CRI Assignment Page 17 of 27

Weakness

1. The implementation will become the most difficult part of this system during the entire
proposed idea. AI-based deep learning in the early stages requires collecting a lot of data
to process the recognition. (R6)
2. The idea of this proposed system costing too much. The reason for this is that it proposes
application through the AI food recognition function to identify the food name and then
display the ingredients of the food item. Consequently, it took various parts to combine
and present this application. (R3)
3. This proposed application requires keeping a connection to a database that allows a user
to perform a real-time search for food items. Meanwhile, a stable Wi-Fi/data hotspot is
the key to finding or recognizing the food's name. (R1)
4. The data isn’t contained in the database, which makes it less accurate for food
recognition. (R9)

Opportunity

1. Hiring more talent programmer to conduct the deep learning AI technology for food
recognition. (R10)
2. Encourage user to provide more information or data which make the food intake
monitoring system more intelligence and efficiency. (R10)
3. Cooperate with other brands related to health products to promote the diet plan and
encourage them to be more familiar with the software. (R7)
4. Automatically displaying the food name and calculating the weight of the food size to
show food ingredients is a trend for the elderly, reducing the problem of measuring the
food weight for calculation nutrition. (R9)

A.P.U Level 2 Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation 202108

BM006-3-2-CRI Assignment Page 18 of 27

Threats

1. Similarly, compared to our proposed system, the pricing of health monitoring

applications may be lower.
2. The elderly is not familiar with this application, and do not understand how the system
processes operate.

Decision Tree
A decision tree is a decision-making tool that employs a graph or model of decisions and their
potential results, such as chance event outcomes, resource costs, and utility. In addition, decision
trees are helpful tools that allow you to choose between multiple options. (Miroslav.R, n.d.)

The figure below depicts (Figure 4) Fintake's real decision-making as a decision tree of a food

Conclusion
To summaries, this project included learning how to define problems in order to establish a
framework for idea generation, as well as understanding how to demonstrate competencies in using
creative tools and techniques for idea generation and evaluating ideas and comparing them to
available alternatives. Before coming up with new ideas, the software development team must be
able to examine the project's major and subproblems in order to provide precise insights into how
to solve them.
Following the implementation of the concepts, the team should devise a marketing strategy to
present such technologies and ideas to the community and society, since this aids in improving
and providing efficiency as well as convenience to people in their everyday activities. There may
be certain difficulties in implementing existing product infrastructure technology. Consequently,
the existing product infrastructure technology can be doing the deep learning technique, there is
an existing system in the real world, but we hope that can make improvements during this proposed
idea.
