Lecture Example Unit 3 & 4

This document discusses two examples involving pure bending and shear forces acting on beams. The first example determines the largest couple that can be applied to a nylon beam based on its allowable stresses. The second example selects the most economical steel beam to support a given loading and determines shear and bending equations and diagrams.

Pure bending
Example 1. The beam shown is made of a nylon for which the allowable stress is 24
MPa in tension and 30 MPa in compression. Determine the largest couple M that can
be applied to the beam. Compare with results the maximum tensile and compressive
stresses of Solidworks.

Design of beams for bending
Example 2. Knowing that the allowable normal stress for the steel used is 24 ksi,
select the most economical wide-flange and F.S. criteria of beam to support the
loading as shown in Fig. Determine the Shear and bending equations and diagrams.
Compare with Solidworks shear and bending diagrams.
