MENG 1010: STATICS AND STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENTS (2020/21)

ASSIGNMENT 1: CHAPTER ONE (DUE 23/09/20)

1. 1. Given that F1 = 200 N, F2 = 325 N and F3 = 480 N in Figure 1.1

a. Complete the table below
Force (N) x-component y-component
200 +200Cos60
325 -325Sin30
480
b. Find the value of 𝜃 if the resultant is in the y-direction.

ASSIGNMENT 6: CHAPTER SIX (DUE 28/10/20)

A steel rod of cross-sectional area 600 mm2 and a coaxial copper tube of cross-sectional area 1000 mm2
are firmly attached at their ends to form a compound bar. Determine the stress in the steel and in the copper
when the temperature of the bar is raised by 80°C and an axial tensile force of 60 kN is applied.
For steel, E = 200 GN/m2 with 𝛼 = 11 x 10-6 ℃
For copper, E = 100 GN/m2 with 𝛼 = 16.5 x 10-6 ℃

ASSIGNMENT 7: CHAPTER SEVEN PART 1 (DUE 04/11/20)

1. Sketch the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the beam in Figure 6.

Figure 6

2. A beam 4.2 m long overhangs each of two simple supports by 0.6m. The beam carries a uniformly
distributed load of 30 kN/m between supports together with concentrated loads of 20 kN and 30 kN at
the two ends. Sketch the S.F. and B.M. diagrams for the beam and hence determine the position of any
points of contraflexure.

ASSIGNMENT 8: CHAPTER SEVEN PART 2 (DUE 11/11/20)

A cast iron beam has a cross-section as shown in Figure 7. The
beam is simply supported on a span of 8 m. The beam carried
a uniformly distributed load of 1.5 kN/m length on the entire
span. Determine the maximum tensile and compressive
stresses.

ASSIGNMENT 9: CHAPTER EIGHT (DUE 18/11/20)

An elemental cube is subjected to tensile stresses of 200 N/mm2 and 120 N/mm2 acting on two mutually
perpendicular planes and a shear stress of 80 N/mm2 acts on these planes. Determine the magnitudes and
directions of the principal stresses and the greatest shear stress using both analytical and graphical methods.

ASSIGNMENT 10: CHAPTER NINE (DUE 25/11/20)

A hollow shaft has to transmit 6 MW at 150 rev/min. The maximum allowable stress is not to exceed 60 MN/m2
nor the angle of twist 0.3° per metre length of shafting. If the outside diameter of the shaft is 300 mm, find
the minimum thickness of the hollow shaft to satisfy the above conditions. G = 80 GN/m2.
