1) Tonyo is the narrator and protagonist of the tale. As a child, he overcomes his fear and kills a manlalayug, a supernatural creature, that has been killing the villagers. 2) Tonyo's brothers tease him for being afraid, but when his grandfather tells stories of the manlalayug, Tonyo sets out to prove himself brave. He encounters the manlalayug and kills it with his dagger. 3) From that day on, Tonyo is known as "Tonyo the Brave" for saving the village from the manlalayug. The killings stop after Tonyo's confrontation with the supernatural creature.

Directions: Read each questions carefully, write your answer supported by your explanation/line
form the story.
1. Who is the narrator of the tale? Why can you say so?
- The narrator of the tale is Tonyo himself because he was sharing his life experience to his
grandchildren the new generation.
2. How did Tonyo kill the manlalayug?
- Tonyo tried to kill the manlalayug in its chest but he remembered that it should be stabbed the
dagger backwards with all of his strength.
3. What type of point of view was used in the tale?
- It is First Point of View: The narrator itself was the first person who is Tonyo. He reminisces a
day in his childhood when he killed manlalayug, earning him the moniker Tonyo, the brave.
4. What was the real cause of the death of Apo’s great grandfather?
- The real cause of the death of Apo’s great grandfather was killed by the manlalayug who eat all
his internal organs.
5. What was the reason why Tonyo’s brother teased him, calling him Sissy?
- The reason why Tonyo’s brother teased him, calling him Sissy because he is always with his
Apo and listen to those stories.
6. What weapon was used by Tonyo in order to wound or hurt the manlalayug?
- The weapon that was used by Tonyo is the dagger who gave by his father for his to kill the
manluluyug.
7. When did Alejandro bring up the subject about the manlalayug to his brothers?
- When he was out and saw that Budok was seen dead in the morning that someone take all his
internal organs.
8. Why did Tonyo decided to went back home when he was sitting in the middle of the
plaza?
- Tonyo went back because he heard the screeched of the bats and a few chirped crickets, and he
felt fear.
9. What were the things that Apo was looking for to prove his hunch about the death of
Budok?
- The things that Apo was looking for to prove his launch about the death of Budok is to find and
fought the manlalayug to kill and see if the this will happen again.
10. What tone was established by the author when he wrote this statement? Overnight, I had
become Tonyo the Brave - and that was the name I become known for, for the rest of my life.
- The tone was established by Tonyo when he said the statement is overjoyed because he was
happy to save the people in his place and that he was not afraid to face any problem.

II. SEQUENCING OF EVENTS (7 pts.)


Directions: Arrange the following events from a to g (a as the first event and g as the last event)
according to the order of the story “The Tale of Tonyo the Brave”. Write your answer on the
space provided before each number. 1 point each.
G. 1. Tonyo the Wimp was changed overnight into Tonyo the Brave until the rest of his life.
C. 2. He decided to run back to their house, but when he reached the second rice field, he saw the
manlalayug.
F. 3. The next day, the whole town searched for a wounded woman but they didn’t find her.
Eventually, the killings stopped after the incident of Tonyo with the manlalayug
A. 4. The manlalayug slowly approached Tonyo and used its special power to lure him. But when
his dagger nicked him, he woke up as if it was a dream and realized that he is in a very dangerous
situation.
B. 5. Tonyo quietly ran into the wide street and onto the open field until he reached the town
proper and he waited on a bench and heard the screeched of the bats and few chirped of the
crickets, and slowly he felt fear.
E. 6. The three brothers told their parents about what Tonyo had done and they checked the place
where Tonyo and the Manlalayug fought but they couldn’t find anything, but only a puddle of
blood, dark and ominous in the moonlight.
D. 7. Tonyo stabbed the manlalayug on her chest but it went pass through her body into thin air,
then he remembered what Apo said He stabbed the dagger backwards with all of his strength,
then he run as fast as he could back to their house.

III.ELEMENTS OF FICTION
Based from the Tale of Tonyo the Brave, analyze the tale using the Elements of Fiction.
Identify and specify your answers to each element. As many as you can find that relates to the
following element.

1. CHARACTERS (protagonist/antagonist, dynamic/static, flat/round):


- Protagonist: Tonyo is the third son/ the youngest of the brothers.
- Antagonist: Manlalayug consumes men's internal organs with its bare hands and
emerges during the full moon.
- Flat/round: Franciso and Carmelita, they are the parents of tonyo.
- Dynamic/Static: Apo (Tonyo’s grandfather) & Fernando and Alejandro (Tonyo’s
brother)
2. SETTING (time, place, weather, condition):
- It took place in Canda, somewhere in South Bukidnon, Philippines. During the old
times or after the war.
3. THEME (sentence form):
We must sacrifice to save someone we love.

4. TYPE OF CONFLICT and why?


- Man vs. Supernatural: Tonyo and his family are the only one who can defeat the
manlalayug, who is a supernatural being.
5. TONE (overall tone), explain:
- Grateful and Angry. Grateful because at last he fought and killed the manlalayug
without fear that he felt. Angry because of what does the manlalayug do to the people
who die and don’t have justice.
6. MOOD (attitude a reader felt about the tale)
- Heroic and Scary. Heroic because he was helping the people in his city to fight the
manluluyag and became the hero of their city. Scary because you cannot believe that
the manluluyag is true in true stories.
