Chapter 9 Problem 15

Doug Casey is organizing a sales management training program, with a critical path identified as A-B-G-H-I, leading to an expected completion time of 15 weeks. To achieve a 0.99 probability of on-time completion, he should start the project approximately 2.4 weeks ahead of the scheduled meeting date, totaling around 17.4 weeks. The variance of the critical path activities is calculated to be 1.05.

DOUG CASEY IS IN CHARGE OF PLANNING AND COORDINATING NEXT

SPRING'S SALES MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR HIS COMPANY.

DOUG LISTED THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITY INFORMATION FOR THIS PROJECT:

CHAPTER 9: PROBLEM 15
A.
DRAW A
PROJECT
NETWORK
B.
PREPARE AN
ACTIVITY
SCHEDULE
C.
WHAT ARE
THE CRITICAL
ACTIVITIES
WHAT IS THE EXPECTED
PROJECT COMPLETION TIME?

Therefore the critical path will be

A-B-G-H-I-Finish

Expected Completion Time:

2+3+4+4+2 = 15 weeks
D. IF DOUG WANTS A 0.99 PROBABILITY OF
COMPLETING THE PROJECT ON TIME, HOW FAR
AHEAD OF THE SCHEDULED MEETING DATE
SHOULD HE BEGIN WORKING ON THE PROJECT?

Variance of critical path will be the sum of

variances of all the critical activities, that is

σ2 = 0.03 + 0.44 + 0.44 + 0.11 + 0.03 = 1.05

In Probability Distribution Table, we find 0.99

probability occurs at the value of z = +2.33

Z= T-E (T) / σ or T= 15 + 2.33 √1.05

= T-15 / √ 1.05 = 17.4 weeks
= 2.33
