Scaffold Tampering
Falls from height remains a major contributor to accidents on construction sites throughout the industry. In order to work in a
safe manner, scaffolding must be erected in accordance with detailed regulations and guidance by fully trained competent
persons.
Audience: All site operatives
What?
Scaffolding is a common sight on most construction sites and working at height is a
regular occurrence.
All scaffolders who are engaged in erecting/altering or dismantling scaffolding
MUST be suitably qualified and carry appropriate cards as evidence of this with
them.
Where changes are required to scaffold platforms, these can only be carried out by
trained scaffolders after consultation with the site manager. All adaptations or
changes must be authorised by the site manager and be ‘handed over’ as safe to
use before any work commences.
Why?
In an accident on a McConnel site a site operative was injured due to the scaffold
platform being tampered with.
The operative fell from a table lift onto the main scaffold platform, approximately
2.4m below. Whilst the operative did not suffer a fracture, the incident is a +7day
RIDDOR.
It has become clear from the accident investigation that the table lift was erected
to an acceptable standard when completed and a handover certificate was Bad practice
available at that time.
However what is not clear is who had actually tampered with the scaffolding in the
run up to the accident. There had been several trades working on the platform
since the handover period but there was no specific evidence to identify the
person(s) responsible. The scaffold had been tampered with and edge protection/handrails removed resulting in the
subsequent fall from height.
What you must do
o You must check with the site manager before accessing any scaffold.
o You must inform the site manager if you need the scaffolding adapted or changed to suit your work.
o Adhere to your method statement in relation to all matters, especially working at height.
o Always ensure that you check that the platform you are to work on is free from defects or hazards. Check that all
handrails/boards/brick guards etc. are in place and should never be removed.
o Do not leave tools or materials lying about on the platform which have the potential to cause slips, trips and falls.
o You must ensure you notify the site manager if you become aware of any safety concerns/issues or defects immediately.
o Remember scaffolds are used by many trades, think of others as well as yourself; your actions have consequences on them
  too.
ANYONE CAUGHT TAMPERING WITH SCAFFOLDING WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISCIPLINARY ACTION AND TOLD TO LEAVE SITE
IMMEDIATELY.
