STEP 1: DETERMINATION OF CRITICAL / SUBCRITICAL FLOW OF PSV
Nomenclature:
PSP Set Pressure (kPa) = 220 kpag = 321.33 kPaa
PO Over Pressure (kPa) = 10% of PSP = 22.00 kpa
PRP Relieving Pressure (kPa) = 242.00 kpag = 343.3250 kPaa
PCF Pressure at Critical Flow (kPa)
PB Back Pressure (kPa) = 101.30 kPaa
P Operating Pressure (kPa) = 220.00 kPaa
T Operating Temperature (K) = 77.15 K
k Sp.heat Ratio = 1.219
Sizing Formulae:
PO = 10% of PSP
PRP = PSP +PO
PCF/PRP = [2/k+1]k/k-1
Calculation:
PSP = 321.33 kPaa
Blocked Case is considered. Therefore:
PRP = 343.325 kPa
P = 220.000 kPa
T = -196.000 deg C
From API - 520 ( Part - 1) Checking whether flow is critical / subcritical
PCF = 193 kPa
As PCF ≥ PB (Critical / Subcritical Flow Criterion)
Flow is Critical

STEP 2: DETERMINATION OF ORIFICE AREA & DESIGNATION N OF PSV 101
`
Nomenclature:
A Required effective discharge area of the device, sq.in [sq.mm]
W Required flow through the device, lb/Hr [kg/hr]
C Coefficient determined from an expression of the ratio of the specific 345
heats(k=CP/CV) of the gas or vapor at inlet relieving conditions.
Kd Effective coefficient of discharge. For preliminary sizing, use the 0.975
following values.
= 0.975 when a pressure relief values is installed with or without a
rupture disk in combination.
= 0.62 when a pressure relief values is not installed and
sizing is for a rupture disk in accordance with 3.11.1.2. of
API 520 - 1
PRP Upstream relieving pressure, psia [kPaa]. This is the set pressure 343.33
plus the allowable overpressure plus atmospheric pressure.
Kb Capacity correction factor due to back pressure. This can be 1
obtained from the manufacturer’s literature or estimated for
preliminary sizing from Fig.30. The back pressure correction factor
applies to balanced bellows valves only.
Combination correction factor for installations with a rupture disk 1
Kc upstream of the pressure relief valve (see 3.11.2).e pressure relief
valve (see 3.11.2).
= 1.0 when a rupture disk is not installed,
= 0.9 when a rupture disk is installed in combination with a pressure
relief valve and the combination dose not have a published valve
T Relieving temperature of the inlet gas or vapor, R (0F + 460) K (0C + 77.15
273)].
Compressibility factor for the deviation of the actual gas from a perfect 0.9868
Z
gas, a ratio evaluated at inlet relieving conditions.
16
M Molecular weight of the gas or vapor at inlet relieving conditions.
Sizing Formulae:
P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2
A = 13160W/CKdPRPKbKc*sqrt(TZ/M)
Calculation:
Flow Rate W = 410.00 kg/hr
Area A = 101.914 sq.mm 0.15797 sq.in
As per API 526
Selected Orifice Size = 0.196 sq.in
Selected Orifice Designation = E
Selected Inlet and Outlet sizes = 1" X 2"
