ILLUSTRATIONS OF QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

(Illustrates quadratic equations. M9AL-la-1)
Quarter 1- Week 1 Lesson 1

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

 The Victoria National High School Mathematics 9 Learners -MDL/ODL will be

easily understand the topic : Quadratic Equation in one variable which is a mathematical
sentence of degree 2 that can be written in standard form , ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a, b, and
c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.

In the equation, ax2 is the quadratic term, bx is the linear term, and c is the constant term.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:

A. QUADRATIC EQUATIONS:

1. 2x2 + 5x - 3 = 0 is a quadratic equation in standard form with a = 2, b = 5, and c = -3

2. 3x(x-2) = 10 is a quadratic equation. However, it is not written in standard form.

To write the equation in standard form, expand the product and make one side of the
equation zero as shown below.
3x(x-2) = 10 ⇒   3x2 - 6x = 10
                            3x2 - 6x - 10 = 10 - 10
                            3x2 - 6x -10 = 0 ------ STANDARD FORM
3. The equation (2x + 5)(x + 1) = -6 is also a quadratic equation but it is not written in
standard form.
(2x+5)(x+1) = ⇒ 2x2 - 2x + 5x - 5 = -6
2x2 + 3x - 5 = -6
2x2 + 3x + 5 + 6 = -6+6
2x2 + 3x + 1 = 0
The equation becomes 2x2 + 3x + 1 = 0, which is in standard form. In the equation  2x2 + 3x
+ 1 = 0 ,  a=2, b=3 and c=1.

4. Equations such as x2 + 5 = 0, -2x2 + 7 = 0, and 16x2 - 9 = 0 are quadratic equations of

the form ax2 + c = 0. In each equation, the value of b = 0.

B. NON- QUADRATIC EQUATIONS:

1. 2x - 16 = 0 , the equation is NOT of degree 2.

2. 3x-2 + 4x + 1 = 0, the exponent is negative.

2
3. +5=0 , the variable is in the denominator.
m
4. 4 √ x +6 x−10 x +6 x−1=0 , this can be simplified as 18x - 1 = 0 → the equation is not
of degree 2

Yes or No Victorians!
ACTIVITY 1:
Identify whether the equation is quadratic or not. Write YES if it is quadratic and NO if
it is not.

_____1. 6x + 4 = 23 _____ 6. 2x-3 + 6x - 21 = 0

2
____ 2. 5x(x-4) = -20 _____ 7. . +7=−6
y

___ 3. 3 √ x+6 x−10−1=0 _____ 8. ( x-4) (x-5) = 3x + 7

____ 4. 2( y – 5)2 = 0 _____ 9. A = lw

____ 5. 3b2 + 5b > -2 _____ 10. (h+3) (h+5) (h-7) = 0

ACTIVITY 2: Complete Me Victorians!

From the equation that hang in the fences of the Municipal Hall of Victoria, just select
three among the given and express them in standard form : ax2 + bx + c = 0, also
identify the values of a , b, and c. Write your answer inside the table of values.

2(x2 + 4) -5x = 6 2x2 + 5x- 6 =0

3x(2x- 4) =5x+6
5x-8= -3x2

SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
(Solves quadratic equations by: (a) extracting square roots; (b) factoring; (c)
completing the square (d) quadratic formula M9AL-la-b-1)
Quarter 1- Week 1 Lesson 2

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Victoria National High School Mathematics 9 Learners -MDL/ODL will be

easily understand and apply the different methods on how to solve the roots /solutions of
A Quadratic Equation of degree 2 with the standard form , ax2 + bx + c = 0.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES:

A. By Extracting Square Roots- Quadratic equations that can be written in the form x2 = k
can be solved by applying the following properties.
♦ If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x = ± √ k
♦ If k = 0, then x2 = k has one real solutions or roots: x = 0
♦ If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
EXAMPLE :
 Find the solutions of the equations x2 - 16 = 0 by extracting square roots. Write the
equation in the form x2 = k.
Solutions:
  x2 - 16 = 0 → x2 - 16 + 16 = 0 + 16
                x2 = 16
x2 = 16 → x = ± √ 16
x = ±4 ----- Roots/Solutions
Checking:
For x = 4:                                For x = -4
   x2 - 16 = 0                                x2 - 16 = 0
   42 - 16 = 0                               (42) - 16 = 0
  16 - 16 = 0                                 16 - 16 = 0
       0 = 0                                          0 = 0
B. By Factoring Method – (1). Transform the quadratic equation into standard form if
necessary; (2). Factor the quadratic expression; (3). Apply the zero product property by
setting each factor of the quadratic expression equal to 0; (4.) Solve each resulting equation;
and (5.) Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting.
EXAMPLE :
Solve 9x2 - 4 = 0 by factoring.
Solutions:
To solve the equation, factor the quadratic expression 9x2 - 4.
      9x2 - 4 = 0 → (3x + 2) (3x - 2) = 0
Set each factor to 0.
      3x2 + 2 = 0 ; 3x - 2 = 0
Solve each resulting equation.
      3x + 2 = 0 → 3x + 2 - 2 = 0 - 2                      3x + 2 = 0 → 3x - 2 + 2 = 0 + 2
                                        3x = - 2                                                            3x = 2
                                     3x/3 = - 2/3                                                    3x/3  = 2/3
                                         x = - 2/3                                                           x = 2/3
Check the values of the variable obtained by substituting each in the equation 9x2 - 4 = 0
        For x = -2/3                                                      For x = 2/3
            9x2 - 4 = 0                                                          9x2 - 4 = 0
            9 ( -2/3 )2 - 4 = 0                                                9 ( 2/3 )2 - 4 = 0
             9 ( 4/9 ) - 4 = 0                                                 9 ( 4/9 ) - 4 = 0
               4 - 4 = 0                                                            4 - 4 = 0
                0 = 0                                                                  0 = 0

C. By Completing the Square -

EXAMPLE :
Solve x2 - 2x - 8 = 0 by completing the square.
x2 - 2x - 8 = 0                    Original Equation
x2 - 2x +  = 8 + ( )    Find the additive inverse of constant c
x  - 2x + ___ = 8
2
Divide b, linear term by 2
2
x2 - 2x + ( -1 )2 = 8 + ( -1 )2 Add the square of one- half of the coefficient of x
x2 - 2x + 1 = 9
(x – 1) = 9
2
Express as square of a binomial
x – 1 = ± √9 Solve
x = 1 ± √9
x = 1±3 Thus the solutions are 4 and -2 ( 1+3) and (1-3)
D. By Quadratic Formula -
EXAMPLE : Solve the roots of x2 + 4x = 5 0 by quadratic formula.

−b ± √b −4 ac
2
x=
2a
x2 + 4x - 5 = 0 Write the equation in standard form
a = 1 ; b = 4 ; c = -5 Determine the values of a, b, and c
x= −4 ± √ ¿ ¿ ¿ Substitute the values of a, b and c in the formula

x= −4 ± √ ¿ ¿ ¿ Simplify:
−4 ± 6 −4 +6 −4−6
x= 2
------------ x1 = 2
=1 x2 = 2
= -5
