Now let us learn more about the salient points of the Five
Functions of Communication.
For the first function, which is to regulate, what does it “It means communication can be used to control
mean when communication regulates or controls? human behavior, Ma’am!”
Exactly! Communication can be used to control human
behavior. It can be used to regulate the nature and number
of activities humans engage in. It ranges from simple
requests to laws governing countries and large territories .
Can you give some basic examples of communication that “An example of this is doctor’s prescriptions, Ma’am!”
regulates/controls?
That’s right! Can you give more examples? “Some other examples are parent’s instructions to their
children and friends giving advice on what course of
action to take, Ma’am!
Excellent! Those are concrete examples of communication
that regulates.
Okay now, what is the second function of communication? “It is social interaction, Ma’am!”
When can we say that communication functions as social “It functions as social interaction when it refers to
interaction? socializing, Ma’am!”
That is right! Social interaction as a function of
communication refers to the use of communication to
socialize or interact with other people.

is it? Please explain.
Correct! Motivation as a function of communication refers
to a person using language to express desires, needs,
wants, likes and dislikes, inclinations, choices, and
aspirations. “Some examples of communication that motivates are,

motivates?
Good! Some other examples are making petitions and
expressing a need (I need…)
Let’s just remember that motivation could either be
extrinsic or intrinsic. An individual may communicate within
self if he uses intrinsic motivation. “The fourth function of communication is to inform”
Let’s now to go to the next function. What is the fourth
function of communication? “When the speaker gives information, Ma’am!”
How does communication function when it informs?
That’s right! Communication can be used in giving and
getting information.
“ Telling weather forecasts, Ma’am!”
Can you give examples of situations where in
“Simple statements telling your address or the number of
communication is used to inform?
siblings you have, Ma’am! Example: I have three sisters.”
Yes, that’s correct! What other examples can you give?
Precisely! These are basic examples of communication
that informs.
Another example is when you are giving information using
rhetorical question. For example: Did you know that some
earphones can be used as microphones?
There are a lot of situations where in we use “None, Ma’am!”
communication to inform.
“ The fifth function of communication is emotional
Now, do you have any questions regarding the discussion? expression, Ma’am! It refers to expressing of emotions.”
Let’s go to the last function. What is the fifth function of
communication? Please explain.
Correct! Emotional expression as a function of
communication refers to the use of expressions such as “The simple saying of words such as ‘yes’, ‘oh no!’,
love, fear, anger, joy, hope, or any other emotion. ‘ouch!’.”
Can you give an example of communication wherein there
is a use of emotional expression?

functions as communication as emotional expression.
