Objective:-
Compaction factor is the workability test for the testing of durability of material.
This test conducted in laboratory. Ratio between the mass and weight in
partially compacted components is called compaction factor testing .This test is
very useful for many civil engineering projects competition. This test is useful
when some other test are not easy to taken or not giving desired results to site
engineer and workers.
Introduction: -
Another test with name compaction factor is using for material
concrete which have the low durability and workability, and where
slump test is not suitable working conditions.
This test provides ascertain and workability for concrete.
Compaction factor conducted in experimental laboratory.
This test gives ration of partially compacted to the weight of fully
compacted concrete materials.
Apparatus for compaction factor test:-
two conical hoppers
bottom cylinder
Steel rod of 1.6cm
Diameter with a length of.
A weight balance
Hand scoop
Balance
3
Procedure: - .
1) For Preparation of M14 concrete. 1: 2: 4 mixture required
2) Inner surface conical hopper must free of moisture. Worker
can apply grease to it.
3) Trap door close from the top hopper.
4) Then Find the measure of the weight of empty bottom cylinder
as Weight one as W1
5) Filling of fresh concrete in upper conical hopper.
6) Open trap door of upper hopper.
7) For falling all concrete to bottom hopper give some seconds
like or 3 seconds.
8) In next step open bottom of the hopper and all concrete will
fallen on the surface of cylinder. User trowel for extra material
elimination.
9) Now find weight of concrete as W2
10) Now cylinder will empty and concrete sample fill again in
three different layers each layer takes 25 blows with steel rod.
11) Now find the weight of cylinder with name w3
Materials: -
.
Mould
Tamping Rod
Trowel
Bass plate

Tamping rod
Tape measure
Data analysis: -
Weight of empty cylinder 48600 g
Mass of partially compacted: 15060g – 4860
g=10200g
Mass of fully compacted 16760g-4860g=11900g
Compaction factor: 10200g/11900g=0.857g

Discussion .
For determining the workability a test with name Compaction test is used. The
Workability of material/concrete is expressed as the ease with freshly mixed cement
and concrete with mortar also used, this can compact and give finished output. 100% of
the compaction is achieved by using Compaction. This test is use when requirements
are to develop a long term road structure. A research laboratory in UK apparatus are
used for this purpose worldwide. These results are precise and accurate than other test.

Conclusion .
Compaction factor is very useful for the dry mixture cases where slump test not gives accurate
results. A reduced sensitivity for compaction factor is observed as compare to normal working
range and this range is greater than 0.93 factor. Water to concrete ration is very important in
this test. These test are use where other test not giving satisfactory results.
