According to some sources in the web, competency standards are the set of reference
that defines the ability, intellect and other dimension an individual must have to
perform a work function.
According to fatimagraceraymundo.blogspot.com, ICT Standards for pre-service
teacher education in the Philippines is composed of seven domains namely, (1)
Understanding ICT in Education, (2) Curriculum and Assessment, (3) Pedagogy, (4)
Technology Tools, (5) Organization and Administration, and lastly (7) Teacher
Disposition.
Base on the picture presented above, the educator on Picture A is practicing the
Traditional way of teaching for the learner, the common way of teaching way back
then where teacher uses traditional instructional materials such as manila paper, chalk,
books etc. where the learner are just taking down notes using pen and paper relying on
what the teacher is discussing and the context in the books with less interaction to the
teacher. On the other side, picture B shows a teacher that is utilizing digital
technology in facilitating the learning of the students, the use of television, laptop, and
power-point presentation in the learning process makes a more participative and
effective way of learning.
Who is better equipped to handle the 21st century learners? Teacher A or Teacher
B? Why? Which of the two teachers would you like to become when you graduate?
Why?
We are now living in an advance world where technology becomes part of our
lifestyle. Among the two educators presented above, the teacher in the second image
(B) where most likely the equipped one to handle the 21st Century Learners. As what I
have said we are already living in a high technology world therefore we must adapt
each and every changes of this modern world for us to go with the flow, similar in
learning, a teacher must also utilize digital technology to facilitate a well, conducive
and effective instructions for the modern learners (21st Century Learners).
As a future educator, I will be versatile when it comes to the mode of instructions
or the method how will I facilitate the learning of my students, I can do both,
traditional and technology base depends on the students and context for as long my
learners will have that power to unleash the skills and ability that they have.
At this time of pandemic, technology plays a vital role in the educational system
but we can’t deny the fact that here in the Philippines there still exist learners that are
underprivileged when it comes to some technological tools for their learning, and we
as teacher must also consider such situation before implementing approach or
methods in teaching them.
