Subject-Verb Agreement (Basic Rules)

III. PROCEDURE
A. Introduction Today, we will be having a new lesson about subject-verb agreement and
its basic rules.
B. Modeling The teacher presents the sentences.

Sentence A: The boy plays.


“The boy” is the subject who is singular, thus the verb “plays”
contains -s.
Sentence B: The boys play.
“The boys” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb “play” do not
have –s.
Sentence C: The teacher teaches.
“The teacher” is the subject who is singular, thus the verb “teaches”
contains -es.
Sentence D: The teachers teach.
“The teachers” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb “teach”
does not have -es.
Sentence E: Louise is in the library.
“Louise” is the subject who is singular, thus the verb “is” should be
used.
Sentence F: The girls are in the library.
“The girls” is the subject who is plural, thus the verb “are” should be
used.
C. Generalization In a sentence, the verb must agree with the subject. Rules in subject-verb
agreement must be observed.

1. Basic Rules
a) Singular subjects go with singular verbs (the –s or –es
form of a verb)
b) Plural subjects go the plural verbs (the simple form of
verb, without –s or -es)

Note: Singular verbs contain –s or –es while plural verbs do not have –s
or –es. Singular subject takes “is” as the verb and plural subject takes
“are” as the verb.
D. Guided Practice i. Analyze each sentence. Identify the verb. Draw a happy face  if
the verb agrees with the subject; draw a sad face  it the verb
does not agree with the subject.
1. Rachel removes the dirty jacket.
2. Androcles escape from his master.
3. They want to finish their output soon.
4. The participants enjoys the view of Taal Lake.
5. The waiter carries the food from table to table.

ii. Rearrange the following set of words to form a sentence with a


complete thought and essence. Box the subject and encircle the
verb.
1. jacket, the, dirty, Rachel, removes
2. escapes, from, master, his, Androcles
3. to, want, they, finish, output, soon, their
4. the participants, enjoy, the view, Taal lake, of
5. carries, the, waiter, food, table to table, from

iii. Read each sentence. Give the correct form of the verbs in
parenthesis.
1. Rachel (remove) __________ the dirty jacket.
2. Androcles (escape) ____________ from his master.
3. They (want) ______ to finish their output soon.
4. The participants (enjoy) _________ the view of Taal Lake.
5. The waiter (carry) _________ the food from table to table.

E. Independent Practice Choose the correct verb in the parenthesis that agrees with the subject.
1. Pet owners (treat, treats) their pets well.
2. Marianne (drive, drives) the banca.
3. Kevin (study, studies) his lesson with his father.
4. My pupils (is, are) excited to visit the Butterfly Garden.
5. We (live, lives) in a world full of wonders.

IV. EVALUATION Choose the correct verb in the parenthesis that agrees with the subject.

1. The family dog (is, are) named Clifford.


2. The silly dog (love, loves) to chase the water from the sprinkler.
3. The neighbors (laugh, laughs) at him.
4. As the sprinkler slings the water, Clifford (snap, snaps) at it.
5. Cats (get, gets) the same treatment.
