Getting to the top of Kilimanjaro isn’t as challenging as reaching the summit of a mountain like Everest. There’s
no actual climbing involved; you can hike to the top. 1 That’s what I’d decided to do so I’d joined an
organized group and had spent the last six days cycling up Kilimanjaro in the company of other mountain bikers.
Our journey had taken us through tropical rain forests to drier landscapes high above the clouds and, eventually,
through snow. The weather kept changing all the time. 2 At first, cycling hadn’t been too difficult, but
as we made our way up the mountain, it became harder to breathe. We were so high up that the oxygen levels in
the air were low. 3 We knew it would be dangerous to try and go quickly in such thin air.
On our fifth day on the mountain we arrived at a place called the Kibo Hut where we would camp for the night,
or at least part of it. We were all feeling excited by now as the next day we would reach the summit. It was 4 am
when our guides woke us. It was freezing cold outside. During the night, the temperature had dropped to -10°.
4 For the next six hours, we slowly made our way along the rocky path to the summit. Sometimes, it
was too difficult to cycle so I got off and continued on foot, pushing my bike. It was so hard to breathe that I
almost gave up and admitted defeat. Luckily, I managed to keep going.
When I finally arrived on the top of Kilimanjaro and looked at the view, I could understand why Uhuru Peak is
known as the Roof of Africa. The sky was wonderfully clear and I could see for miles. 5 I had been
looking forward to this part of the trip so much but suddenly it seemed scary. How could I ride a bike all the way
down this mountain without having an accident? What if I lost my balance and fell? The sharp rocks could cause
a serious injury. 6 Fortunately, everything went well as I made my way downhill. After a while, I even
started to relax and enjoy myself.
We got back into the rainforest near the bottom of the mountain so quickly! It had taken me six days to get up
the mountain and less than one to get down! What a great adventure in one of the most incredible places on
Earth.
A We’d had heavy rain, hot sunny days and cold winds.
B After I’d taken some photos of the view from the summit and a couple of selfies, it was time to make my way back
down.
C Even though I felt worried, I got on my bike and set off down the mountain.
D I put on lots of warm clothes and got on my bike.
E Suddenly, I fell off my bike and ended up on the ground in pain.
F It’s possible to ride most of the way to the summit on a mountain bike too!
G So instead of pushing ourselves, we continued up the mountain very slowly.
