Lesson Plan: Evidence Base

This lesson plan introduces freshman students with low GPAs to SMART goals. The counselor will teach students how to set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals to improve their academic performance. Students will learn how to create their own SMART goals and discuss them with peers. The counselor will collect the students' SMART goals and assess whether setting goals helped improve their grades over the following academic quarter. Students who do not understand the content will meet one-on-one with the counselor to revisit creating and using SMART goals.

Topic/Focus:
Communicate the Setting goals as early on can give students a clearer path of where they

Teach Content: Going over SMART goal examples as they relate to our specific student
population
Practice Content: Give time for students to create their own SMART goals.
Students are encouraged to discuss their goal with their peers.
Summarize/Close: Counselors will collect the SMART Goals and have students fill out the
post-assessment. They will encourage students to volunteer to share
what they have learned.
The counselor will remind students that their door is always open if
students want to discuss their goals further.

Follow-Up Plans
Explain your plan for students who missed the lesson.
Students will view PowerPoint and create SMART Goals on their own. They meet with their
counselor for 15 minutes to go over their goals and discuss their takeaways from the lesson
and any questions they may have.
Explain your plan for students who did not demonstrate mastery on the pre-/post-assessment of
student standards (M&B)/student learning objectives.
For the students who did not demonstrate mastery on the post-assessment of the learning
objectives, a one-on-one meeting will be scheduled to go over their SMART goals together. For
students who claimed that they demonstrated mastery on the post-assessment, but their
mastery is not reflected in their work ethic moving forward, a one-on-one will also be
scheduled.
