Mathematics
Quarter 2 - Module 6
Writes Expressions
with Rational Exponents as
Radicals and Vice Versa
Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each

SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the
lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your
learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be
honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can
best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And
read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.
Lesson Writes Expressions with
Rational Exponents as Radicals

You have learned how to use exponents to express powers of numbers. In this
module, you will learn to write expressions with rational exponents as radicals by
applying the laws of exponents.

What I Need to Know

LEARNING COMPETENCY

The learners will be able to write expressions with rational exponents

as radicals and vice versa. (M9AL-IIf-1)

Find out how much you already know about the module. Choose the letter of
the best answer. Assume all variables are positive. After taking and checking this
short test, take note of the items that you were not able to answer correctly and look
for the right answer as you go through this module.

WRITING EXPRESSSIONS WITH RATIONAL EXPONENTS AS RADICALS AND

VICE VERSA

In the previous lesson, expressions with rational exponents (fractional

exponents) are expressions with exponents that are rational. Radicals and
expressions with rational exponents are alternate ways of expressing the same thing.
A radical expression is an algebraic expression written in the form n√a. The
symbol √𝒂 is called the radical sign, a is the radicand and n is the index.

index 𝒏 radical sign

√𝒂 radicand

Convert Expressions with Rational Exponent into Radicals

If we apply the laws of exponents, we can see there are two possible ways to
change an expression with fractional exponent into a radical expression.
𝑚 1 𝑚 𝑚 1
𝑛 𝑛
𝑎 𝑛 = (𝑎𝑛 ) = ( √𝑎)𝑚 or 𝑎 𝑛 = (𝑎𝑚 )𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚

All RULES that apply to whole number exponents, also apply to

fractional exponents.

Examples:
2
3 3
1. 73 = (√7)2 = √72 In the expression with rational (fractional)
2
exponent as3, the denominator 3 of the
rational exponent determines the index and
the numerator 2 as exponent of the
radicand 7 or radical.
2
3
2. (𝑥𝑦)3 = √(𝑥𝑦)2 The exponent applies to x and y because of
3
= √𝑥 2 𝑦 2 the parentheses.
2
5
3. 8𝑥 5 = 8√𝑥 2 The exponent applies only to the variable x.
2
1 1 1
4. 𝑥 − 3 = 2 = 3 𝑜𝑟 3
𝑥3 ( √𝑥 )2 √𝑥 2

1
5. (𝑎2 + 𝑏 3 )2 = √𝑎2 + 𝑏 3

3 CO_Q2_Mathematics9 _ Module 6
Convert Radicals to Expressions with Rational Exponent
𝑛
Any radical expressions in the form √𝑎𝑚 can be written as an expression with
𝑚
rational exponent in the form 𝑎 𝑛 . The index n of the radical will become the
denominator and the exponent m of the radicand will become the numerator of the
rational exponent.
1
3
1. √𝑏 = 𝑏 3 The index is 3 and the exponent is 1.
4
3
2. √24 = 2 3 The index is 3 and the exponent is 4.
1
4
3. √2𝑥 = (2𝑥) 4 The index is 4 and the exponent is 1.
4
3
4. 2(√𝑦 4 ) = 2𝑦 3 The index is 3 and the exponent is 4, the
fractional exponent is only for y.

Try this!
A. Express the following in radical form.
3 7
1. 54 __________ 4. 𝑏 4 __________
2
2. (3𝑥𝑦)3 __________ 1
5.(𝑥 + 𝑦)3 _________
3
3. 6𝑎5 __________

B. Express the following with rational exponent.

8 5
1.√𝑎𝑏 _________ 3. √𝑚7 __________

9 9 7
2. (√4) _________ 4. ( √23) __________

3
5. √25 __________

Additional Activities

REFLECTIVE LEARNING

In today’s world, there are many luxuries that are supposed to make life
easier. At times they may, but other times they make thing more complicated.
As a student, how will you apply what you learned about simplifying expressions
with zero, negative integral and rational exponent in today’s situation? Do you
believe in simple living? What does it mean to live simple? Is it good to live a
simple life especially in this time of pandemic?
