Pervasive Computing - vision and
challenge
Title
● The paper provides the conceptual
foundations for pervasive computing
applications.
● shows the deep relationships
between distributed systems, mobile
computing, and pervasive computing.
● Thus, the title is researchable and
the title conveys the body of the
article.
● An abstract of an article is just the window
of a research work through which one can
see what the research is all about.
Abstract ● this article has clearly shown the whole
process of the study in its abstract
● It has a brief description of what is
included in the article from the start to the
conclusion of the paper
● even though the process is stated, the
methods involved and the major findings
are not clearly seen on its abstract
● The introductory part of the paper is well
structured
● It has tried to show Mark Weiser’s vision
on pervasive computing. It stated that the
Introduction reason why the implementation attempted
by Weiser and his colleagues at Xerox
PARC.
● The paper tried to show the current status
of hardware progress comparing it to the
previous experience and believes that
now is the time to see and explore the
visions of Weiser on pervasive computing.
● The goal of this paper is to understand the
challenges in computer systems research
posed by pervasive computing
● The paper has tried to define related fields and
their relationship with pervasive computing
● stated that some problems has been identified
and studied earlier in the evolution of pervasive
Literature Review computing.
● showed that there are some existing solutions
that can be used and also some which needs new
solution.
● The paper also mentioned that there are also new
problems introduced by pervasive computing that
have no obvious mapping to problems studied
earlier.
● it lacks analysis and synthesis of the studies
related to pervasive computing and related fields
mentioned on the paper.
● The purpose of the literature review is not clear
● There is no clear definition of pervasive
computing in the current literature.
● specific inclusion criteria for selecting articles
Research ●
about relevant systems were developed
researches were conducted in four scientific
Design/Methodology ●
databases alongside manual journal searches.
The article doesn’t fall in to any one of the
different research designs. But it uses two
hypothetical scenarios to answer the question,
what would it be like to live in a world with
pervasive computing?.
● Qualitative analyses were performed of
deployment issues, such as organizational and
personnel issues, privacy and security issues,
and financial issues
Research
Design/Methodology
● This paper provides a comprehensive access to
the literature of the emerging field by addressing
specific topics of application settings, systems
features, and deployment experiences.
● The overall objective of the study was to state the
vision of pervasive computing and determine the
challenges
Results/Findings ● According to the author some of the design and
implementation problems in pervasive computing
are mentioned
➔ User Intent
➔ Cyber Foraging
➔ Adaptation Strategy
➔ High-level Energy Management
➔ Client Thickness
➔ Privacy and Trust
➔ Impact on Layering
● With the human-centered Pervasive computing,
the most precious resource in a computer system
Discussion will no longer be its processor, memory, disk or
network.
● The goal of Pervasive computing is therefore to
get computing devices woven into our
environments to such an extent that they become
invisible or unnoticeable, and we interact with
them without being aware that we are using
computers.
● computing poses some challenges as well
● Pervasive computing will be a fertile source of
Conclusion challenging research problems in computer
systems for many years to come.
● Because pervasive computing systems are
capable of collecting, processing and
communicating data, they can adapt to the data's
context and activity. That means, in essence, that
a network that can understand its surroundings
and improve the human experience and quality of
life.
