Answer the following question on a different sheet of bond paper. Be guided accordingly
to the rubric that follows.

1. How does Jack Wigley’s use of humor in his essay examine how Filipinos deal with
adversity? Write your discussion in a 3-5 paragraphs of three to five sentences.

Misfortune is like a normal thing for every Filipino. We are used to it

because even if it is a volcanic eruption, a typhoon, or any calamities’ we face, we
always have that resilience in our hearts. Jack Wigley describes that in a
humorous tone in his essay entitled “Home of the Ashfall”.

With that, he was able to explain clearly the struggles of Filipino

especially those who are poor. He admired poor people because when everything

goes down, they can think of something they should do to survive. You can see

co
how he conveys how fast Filipinos recovers from a tragedy.

Telling a story with a humor tone will show how strong you are as a
is

person. It will make you have less emotions but not in a bad way. It would
Th

probably helpful during times of calamity.

If I would be able to be in Jack Wigley’s situation, I’d be more emotional

sh

because it was a scary thing. To see everyone lose their homes and loved ones,
would probably scare out of me. Mount Pinatubo’s eruption took many lives so I
would be in fear because my loved ones can be one of those.

Even if Wigley did not suffer from losing a member of his family, it is still
terrifying to face such damage caused by Mt. Pinatubo. I wouldn’t be able to tell
my story with humor in times like that. I want to tell every detail with every
emotion I have.

I would probably have a humor tone if I did get over the situation. That is
when everything goes back to normal.

In the end, that experience will always change how I see life. It is a lesson
or motivation for me to not give up. And, it will always remind me that we can
overcome any difficulties because we chose to do so.
