Illuminado Lucente
Iluminado Lucente (May 14, 1883 - February 14, 1960) was a Philippine writer, primarily writing poetry and drama in the
Waray language. He is considered to be one of the finest writers in the Waray language.
Lucente was a member of the Sanghiran san Binisaya ha Samar ug Leyte (Academy of the Visayan Language of Samar and
Leyte). His most famous work is the poem An Iroy nga Tuna (The Motherland).
Becoming Mayor of Tacloban in 1912, he was elected to congress for Leyte, and later became Secretary to the Governor, then
Secretary of the Senate, for Senate president Franciso Enage.
He wrote about 30 plays and was known for both satire using character stereotypes and linguistic humour, which often took the
form of plays on language, combining the sounds of Spanish, English and Waray.
Norberto Romualdez
On June 6, 1875, Norberto Romualdez Sr., Leyte's favorite son and delegate to the first constitutional convention, was born
in Burauen, Leyte. He was the brother of Vicente Orestes Romualdez, the father of Imelda Romualdez Marcos.
Romualdez was one of the "Seven Wise Men" who drafted the 1935 Constitution for the Philippine Commonwealth.
In the Commonwealth National Assembly, he was chairman of the Committee on National Language. He sponsored Act
No. 184 which provided for the adoption of the National Language and the creation of the National Language Institute.
Romualdez was the author of Philippine Orthography where he proposed how to systematically write in the native
language.
While growing up in his native Leyte province, he first achieved status as a writer in the Waray-Waray language. He
published his Bisayan Grammar which was intended to be for American soldiers stationed in Tacloban, Leyte who wanted
to learn the language.
Martin Abellana (1904–1989) was a Filipino Visayan writer. He was a teacher by profession. In the years 1956 to 1958, he was
president of the LUDABI, a group of writers in Cebuano. His novels are characterized by a concern for the working class.
Abellana National School, Cebu City is named after him.
