To come up with an accurate analysis and interpretation of the data
gathered, the following statistical tools were used:
Percentage Technique. This technique was used to organize and
summarize the data collected. This was used to quantify the data on population.
P=f n x 100%
where:
P = the percentage
f = the frequency
n = the number of respondents
Mean. This was utilized to measure the average level of grammar proficiency
and reading comprehension of the pupils.
where:
= mean
Σx = sum of the measurement of values
n = number of measurements
Standard Deviation. This was utilized to measure the spread of the
scores of learners’ grammar proficiency and reading comprehension.
where:
S = standard deviation
∑ = means “sum of”
X = each value in the data set
X = mean of all values in the data set
f = frequency of each data set
n = number of values in the data set
Proficiency Level (PL). This was utilized to determine the pupils’ level
of grammar proficiency and reading comprehension skills.
where:
Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. This tool was used to determine
the significant relationship between the learners’ grammar proficiency and their
grammar proficiency.
where: N = the number of pairs of scores
∑xy = the sum of products of paired scores
∑x = the sum of x scores
∑y = the sum of y scores
∑x2 = the sum of squared x scores
∑y2 = the sum of squared y scores
Coefficient of Determination (r2). This tool was used to determine
the effect of grammar proficiency on pupils’ reading comprehension skill.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The following statistical tools were used to answer the specific questions
of the study.
Percentage technique. This tool was used to quantify the data. (Boyer, et .al.,
2017).
Weighted Mean. This tool was used to determine the status of the
respondent’s ability in recognizing and interpreting metaphoric words/phrases, the level
of reading comprehension of the respondent’s in terms of ability to identify main idea of
a passage, drawing conclusion from the given passage and identifying Inferences from
the given passage.
Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient. This measures the
strength of a linear association between the ability of the students in recognizing and
interpreting metaphors and the reading comprehension of the students denoted by r.
