COMPARING AND CONTRASTING

When I compare I identify what’s the same.


Words used to compare:

• Same (adj)

• Similar to (adj)

• Similarly (adv)

• Alike adj.  very similar

e.g. The father and the son are alike.

adv.  in the same manner, similarly:

e.g. People from the same area talk alike

• To resemble (vb) = look like

e.g. That cloud resembles a ship.

• To have in common

• Both X and Y

e.g. Both he and his brother are left-handed.

When I contrast I identify what’s different


• To differ from
• To be different
• In contrast to
• On the contrary
• As opposed to
• One difference is … / another difference is…
• Instead
• whereas = while
e.g. He likes broccoli, whereas his wife hates it.
• Unlike = different / differently from
e.g. Unlike his father, he doesn’t drive fast.
