The SWOT analysis is a strategic planning
tool, designed to perform an internal
(Strengths and Weaknesses) and external
(Opportunities and Threats) analysis of the
company. From this point of view, the word
SWOT is an acronym created from each
initial letter of the terms mentioned above.
It seeks to guide with the study what are the
strengths of the organization, either in terms
of the resources it has, the quality of it, etc... Also, externally it can study the
threats that may exist as in the political or social field. It should be noted
that the SWOT is a fundamental tool in management and in the planning
process, in fact, with this study will benefit from a business plan, being able
to give strength to the acronym of opportunity, achieving in addition, the
real situation in which the company or project is, and to plan a strategy for
the future.
STRENGTHS: Function that the organization performs
correctly, such as certain special capabilities that give it a
privileged position over the competition. They are the
resources that are controlled, capabilities and skills that are
available and activities that are developed positively.
-What are the things that your company does very well, better than many others?
-Is your company strong in the market or in the segment you are targeting? Why?
-Is the team of people committed to the company and to the vision for the future?
WEAKNESSES: Identify weaknesses and
develop a strategy with strengths to
overcome them. They are those factors that
cause an unfavorable position in front of the
competition. They are the resources that are
lacking, skills that are not possessed,
activities that are not developed positively,
etc. but we can influence them by knowing them, in order to reduce their effects on
the company.
-What are the reasons for the existing problems?
-Are the defects caused by insufficient resources or their misallocation?
OPPORTUNITIES: The opportunity
in the environment is a factor of
great importance that allows in
some way to shape the strategies of
organizations. Variables that are
positive, favorable, exploitable and
that must be discovered in the environment in which the company operates, since
they allow to obtain competitive advantages with respect to others.
-Is the market in which your company operates growing?
-Do the products or services meet consumer trends, or could they be adapted to
do so?
-Are there new technologies or changes in the regulatory framework that your
company can take advantage of?
THREATS: Situations that come
from the environment (external
variables) and that can even
threaten the permanence of the
organization, we can hardly
influence them, however it is
essential to know them to minimize their capacity to affect us.
-What things do competitors do better than your company?
-What legal, tax or regulatory obstacles does your business face?
-Are there new technologies or consumer trends that threaten the future of your
products or services?
It is used to develop a business
strategy that is solid in the future,
in addition, the SWOT analysis is a
useful tool that every company
or industry manager should
execute and take into
consideration.
It should be noted that, if there is
a complex situation, the SWOT analysis can deal with it in a simple and
effective way. Focusing on the factors that have the greatest impact on
the organization or in our daily life if it is the case, from there, efficient
decisions and relevant actions will be taken.
In addition, the SWOT helps to have an improved approach, being
competitive with the niche markets to which the company is heading,
having greater opportunities in the market to be handled by creating
strategies for effective competition.
