Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 5 Self-Learning Module on Recyclable Materials!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their

What I Need to Know

Hello! How are you? It is a great day to start another module. This module was
designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master recyclable
materials and how to design them in order to make more useful products (S5MT-Ih-
i-4). The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students.
The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order
in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

Recycling means to produce a new material out of discarded ones. Through

this process, a new product is created using a material that has already served its
purpose.

Recycling has a lot of benefits. It prevents wastage of a material that can

actually be useful for a different purpose. Moreover, it also helps reduce the use of
raw materials. Lastly, it also provides a source of income to families by selling the
new products they formed from discarded materials.

Are the recyclable materials found in the list available in your locality,
community, or at home? How many of these recyclable materials can be found at
home? What do you usually do with these materials? Do you consider recycling? Why
is there a need to recycle materials?

What’s New

Activity 1 – Create and Innovate!

Directions: Think of a new and more useful product that you can create and
innovate using the recyclable materials inside the box. Answer the questions that
follow. Do this in your activity sheet. Remember: Do not write anything on this
module.

Recycling produces a new material or product out of discarded ones. Glass
bottles can be reused as containers of other liquids or materials. Stained glass can
be recycled to form a new product like bottle chimes or paper weights. The purpose
or recycling should be different from its original function but the idea of minimizing
waste has been achieved.

Activity 7 – Be Protected

Task: Make your own version of face mask with rubber bands or hair ties.

Materials: old clean t-shirt, scissors, ruler or tape measure, 2 rubber bands or
large hair ties

Procedure:

1. Lay an old t-shirt out on a flat surface. Using a ruler

or tape measure, start at the bottom of the shirt
and measure up 7-8 inches.

2. Cut up and across. You will end up with a big

rectangle. This will be the material for your
face mask. Place the remaining material from
the t-shirt to the side.

3. Place the rectangular piece of fabric on a flat

surface and fold the material from the bottom to the
middle. Then, fold the material from the top to the
middle.

4. Fold it again from the bottom to the

middle, and the top to the middle. This
will be your mask.

5. Loop a rubber band or large hair tie

around each end of the fabric, about 2
inches in from the end of the fabric.

6. Fold the right side in towards the center,

then, the left side in towards the center. The two
should meet.

7. Grab the mask by the rubber bands or hair ties

and place over your mouth, securing each side by
wrapping the band or hair tie around your ear.
This should be tight enough to keep the mask in
place.
