Updated ASTM F 2058-07:
New Pictograms Expand The Reach of Candle Fire Safety
ASTM F 2058 Standard Specification for Candle Fire Safety Labeling has recently been updated. One notable change is a provision that allows two options for candle safety labeling. Manufacturers and retailers now have the choice of using a text only label or a text and pictogram label.
Other changes include allowing: the use of abbreviated warnings for small warning panels; the use of equivalent wording; and changes in font size requirements.
Why is a Labeling Standard for Candles Necessary?
The Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted a study that showed most candle fires are caused by leaving candles unattended, placing candles near flammable items, and children playing with candles. To address these New Pictograms* concerns, in 2000 ASTM published Standard F 2058 Cautionary Labeling For Candles Burned In A Home to address candle fire safety labeling. The standard’s intent was to educate consumers about the dangers of misuse and Burn abuse of candles. within sight Updated Standard Offers More Labeling Options The recent update of ASTM F 2058-07 Standard Specification for Candle Fire Safety Labeling provides improvements to candle labeling that increase consumer understanding through the use of a pictogram and text option. Keep As in the former version, a text only option is allowed, but equivalent wording away from is now acceptable for the three statements: things that catch fire • Burn within sight • Keep away from things that catch fire • Keep away from Children Keep In addition to the warnings, requirements for label size, font size, safety away from alert symbol size, and label placement have been changed. Minimum size Children requirements for the components of the label are now dependent on the surface area of the entire warning panel. Another change in this update allows for abbreviated warnings for small candles and individually wrapped taper candles.
