E. ELABORATE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

- You all did great in our activity

- So, expect for your virtual

recitation after our discussion.

- Now please prepare scientific

calculator because we need that for
our discussion.
- Okay, let us go to the
discussion

What can you say about temperature scales?

Or what is temperature scales? Anyone?

- Very good!

So Temperature scale is a way to measure

temperature relative to a starting point (zero)
and a unit of measurement.

There are several scales and units exist for

measuring temperature. The most common
are:

● Fahrenheit (denoted °F)

● Celsius (denoted °C)
● Kelvin (denoted K, especially in science)

First, let’s introduce the scales and then I’ll

talk about on how to convert between them.

● Fahrenheit temperature scale invented by a

German Physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit is a
scale based on 32°F for the freezing point of
water and 212°F for the boiling point of water,
the interval between the two being divided into
180 parts.

● On the Celsius temperature scale also called

centigrade temperature scale invented by the
Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, it is used in
countries that use the metric system and the
scale based on 0°C for the freezing point of water
and 100°C for the boiling point of water.

● The third and finale scale is the kelvin

scale invented by a British Physicist William
Thomson also known as Lord Kelvin. This
scale is similar the Celsius scale but shifted
by 273. So water freezes at 273K and boils
at 373K. The Kelvin scale is based on
absolute zero. This is the lowest
temperature that is theoretically possible and
puts atoms at their lowest energy state. So
absolute zero is 0 K which is approximately
-273°C and -459°F.

Now, to convert between the temperature

scales, you need to know the formula.

Celsius and Kelvin are based on the same

size degree, just with different “zero” points,
so this equation is simple:

The formula to convert Celsius to Kelvin is

K = °C + 273 or , if you want more significant
figures: K = °C + 273.15

So now let us have an example:

● Convert 27°C to Kelvin.

Solution:

K = °C + 273
K = 27°C + 273
K = 300 ✔

Another example
Try to solve this

● Convert 100°C to Kelvin.

Anyone from the class to try to solve this

problem?

Next, converting between Celsius and

Fahrenheit it is a little trickier, because the
degrees are not equivalent. Luckily, there is
a simple equation.

The formula to convert Celsius to

Fahrenheit is
F = 9/5(°C) + 32

Let’s convert 18°C into Fahrenheit.

- Any volunteer to answer this

problem?

- Okay no one try to solve this

problem....

So, to convert 18°C into Fahrenheit.

Solution:

F =9/5(°C) + 32
F = 9/5(18°C) + 32
F = 32.4 + 32
F = 64.4°F ✔

First, multiply 9/5 by 18°C and then add 32,

which gives you 64.4°F

Now let’s convert Fahrenheit into degrees

Celsius. The formula is: C = 5/9 (°F – 32)

Okay, let’s have example:

● Convert 300°F to °C.

Solution:

C = 5/9 (°F – 32)

C = 5/9 (300°F – 32)
C = 5/9 (268)
C = 148.9°C ✔

We first need to subtract 300°F to 32, then

multiply the result by 5/9, Giving us 148.9°C. ..

Another example;

● A thermometer in a science lab displays

the temperature in both Celsius and
Fahrenheit. If the mercury in the
thermometer rises to 77°F. What is the
corresponding Celsius temperature?

- Okay please Mr. _____ try to

solve this problem. Write in on the
chat box.
Solution:

C = 5/9 (°F – 32)

C = 5/9 (77°F – 32)
C = 5/9 (45)
C = 25°C ✔

- That’s correct!👍 Very good Mr.

___😊.

Generalization

- Now, Are there any questions?

- So let us have a recap, kindly
drop your answer in the chat box.

- What is the formula in

converting Celsius to Fahrenheit?
- None ma’am
- Very good!

- How about in converting

Celsius to Kelvin?

- Very good! Okay last
question....

- What is the formula in - K= C + 273

converting the Fahrenheit to Celsius?

- That’s correct! Very good

class....
- C= 5/9 (°F – 32)
- You all did understand the
lesson

- Okay class since there are no

more questions and you all
understand the lesson.

- I want you all to solve the

problems then write in on the chat
box. You are given 3 minutes to drop
your solution in the chat box. This will
be for 15 points. Is that clear class?

- Are you ready?

- Okay, time starts now.

1. Convert 25°C to Kelvin.

2. Convert 98°F to °C.
- Yes ma’am
3. Convert 40° to °F

(solution)

● K= C + 273
= 25°C + 273
= 298 K. (STUDENT ANSWER)

● °C= 5/9 (°F – 32)

= 5/9 (98°F – 32)
= 5/9 (66)
= 36.7°C

● °F= 9/5C + 32
= 9/5(40°C) + 32
= 72 + 32
= 104°F

- I got your answers class, you

all did well.
