THE NATURE OF INQUIRY AND RESEARCH
Module 1
For the learner/s:
Welcome to the Research in Daily Life 2
Module on Research in Daily Life 2
Our mind is the most powerful part of our human body, with our mind
working at its best, we can achieve anything. Despite different
circumstances we might face, we should stand firm and continue with
life. Our mind is associated with our ability to learn, appreciate and
create essential things. Hence, this signifies that you as a learner is
capable and empowered to succeed. Your academic success lies in
your own hands!
This module aims to provide the essential concepts, skills and
competencies needed which are useful in real life situations. The lessons
and activities in this module is designed with accordance to the skills and
tasks suited for 21st Century learners.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
Objectives - These are what you will be able to know
after completing the lessons in the module
Pre-test - This will measure your prior knowledge and
the concepts to be mastered throughout the lesson.
Lesson- This section will discuss the topic for this module.
Activities - This is a set of activities you will perform.
Generalization- This section summarizes the concepts
and applications of the lessons.
Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned
from the entire module.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson the student should be able to:
a. define what is research
b. determined the similarities and difference of inquiry and research,
and
c. Identify the different characteristics of research.
LESSON
THE NATURE OF INQUIRY AND RESEARCH
The world as we know it is full of mysteries. All individuals, phenomenon,
and events have all different features and qualities that make us
wonders constantly. Questions after questions on the many aspects
drives your curiosity stimulate you to move, act, or investigate to find
answers to your questions or to discover the underlying truths about our
questions. In this chapter we‟re going to discuss how inquiry starts and
how it leads a person to conduct research.
INQUIRY vs RESEARCH
Inquiry is a word that is synonymous with the word ‘investigation,‟
whenever we inquire or investigate something we tend to ask questions
in order to prove or disprove an idea. It is also a way of seeking truth,
information or knowledge, and individuals tend to carry the process of
inquiry from birth till death.
Practicing inquiry greatly improve one‟s higher order thinking skill
(HOTS) which includes analytical, critical, inferential and creative
thinking with this it helps an individual to ask open ended questions,
propose views, beliefs and opinions.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
Research is defined as the scientific
investigation of phenomena which includes
collection, presentation, analysis
and interpretation of facts that
lines an individual„s speculation with
reality. Starting from a specific to more
complex ideas, researchers execute varied
thinking acts that range from lower-order to
higher-order thinking strategies that include
activities such as identifying the topic
or problem, gathering data, making
theories, formulating hypotheses, analyzing
data, and drawing conclusions.
SEVEN CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
1. Empirical: Research is based on direct experience or observation
by the researcher.
2. Logical: Research is based on valid procedures and principles.
3. Cyclical: Research is a cyclical process because it starts with a
problem and ends with a problem.
4. Analytical: Research utilizes proven analytical procedures in
gathering the data, whether historical, descriptive, and
experimental and case study.
5. Critical: Research exhibits
careful and precise judgment.
6. Methodical: Research is
conducted in a methodical
manner without bias using
systematic method and
procedures.
7. Replicability: The research
design and procedures are
replicated or repeated to
enable the researcher to arrive
at valid and conclusive results
COMPARISSON OF INQUIRY AND RESARCH
Both inquiry and
research drives an individual to
articulate questions to direct them to
the exact information they want to
discover about the center of their
curiosity. Although the core word for
both inquiry and research is
investigation or questioning, they are
not exactly the same in all aspects.
Research includes more complex
acts of investigation than inquiry
because the former
follows a scientific
procedure of discovering truths or meanings about things in this world.
GENERALIZATION
Research is important in our daily life because it provides
information that allows us to make informed decisions. For example:
People in a town are all getting sick with the same illness as evidenced
by the same symptoms. We need to find the cause of the illness, how to
treat it, and how to stop more people from getting sick. We might guess
what the cause is: it could be evil spirits are attacking the people who
are practicing black magic; or it could be a contamination of the water
source; or it could be a contagious disease that will run its course but
how do we limit the spread? Research can help narrow down the
options, identify the treatment that has been the most affective and rule
out what it isn't. Research directs us to inquire about the right information
by conducting further investigation of the actual condition. It leads us to
be cautious in giving results and findings by proving lies and supporting
the truth.
Answer Sheet in Practical Research 2 Module 1
Name: _________________________ Date:_____________
PRE–TEST
IDENTIFICATION: Identify whether the following statements can be
classified as research or problem-solving. Write R if it pertains to
RESEARCH and PS if it is PROBLEM-SOLVING. Write your answer at the
space provided.
___________1 .There may not be a problem to be solved, only to satisfy a
query.
___________2. It is concerned with recurrent phenomena and wide
application.
___________3. The research problem is not necessarily defined
specifically.
___________4. It is conducted to make a contribution to general
knowledge.
___________5. Once the problem is solved, that is the end of it.
ACTIVITY
REFLECTION CHECK: Read each questions carefully and explain your
understanding of research and inquiry by answering the following
questions.
1. Create a graphic organizer showing the similarities and contrast of
research and inquiry.
2. Do you have an application of research and inquiry in day to day
basis?
3. Which is easier to carry out for you RESEARCH or INQUIRY? Explain your
answer.
