Subject ID: EC-616 (Section–EC & CN) Subject: Microwave Engineering
Maximum marks: 50 Time: 3 hours
Instructions:

1. Answer Question Nos.1, 2 and any 6 questions out of rest.


2. All parts of a question should be written in single continuous place.
3. Due credit will be awarded for neatness and appropriateness of answers.

Answer the following short questions with appropriate logic (with in one-two sentences). 1×

a) Find the ABCD parameters of a N:1 voltage transformer. 10=


b) A filter having insertion loss of 2 dB. How much %power will be delivered to the load in
perfectly matched condition? 10
c) A Low noise amplifier has noise figure of 2 dB and gain of 30 dB. A signal having SNR
of 10 dB is fed at the input of the LNA? What will be the SNR at the output of LNA?
d) Two microstrip lines have exactly same geometries. However, substrates are different
i.e. 𝜖𝑟 = 4 and 9. Now compare the impedances of two lines.

e) An underground coaxial cable has got two abrupt bents due to damage in civil
constructions. In ideal case, how many reflections do you expect to see at the source?
f) Write the property of the scattering matrix related to the shift in reference planes.
g) A microwave communication system requires high out of band rejection. Which type of
filter do you opt for the system design.
h) Write two applications of dielectric resonator.
i) Why coupled line couplers are not suitable for tight coupling?
j) A perfectly matched directional coupler has got coupling of 10 dB, and directivity of 20
dB. How much power will be available at the isolated port for a input power of 1 W?

a) Show that the input impedance 𝑍 of a parallel RLC circuit satisfies the condition that

b) A resistive power divider has got scattering matrix as mentioned below. If 10 mW power =10

d) Design a single-section quarter-wave matching transformer to match 20 Ω load to a 50


Ω line, at center frequency 2 GHz. Determine the percentage bandwidth for which the
SWR ≤ 2.0.

e) Find the admittance parameters of a transmission line with length 𝑙, characteristic
impedance 𝑍0 and propagation constant 𝛽.

3. Design a two-stage matching network to transform 10Ω to 50Ω using Q matching method.

Design a maximally flat low pass composite filter with a cut-off frequency 5 GHz, impedance

of 0.30 cm and a strip spacing of 0.1173 cm. Find the even- and odd-mode characteristics
impedances (approximately) and coupling coefficient.

b) Write the scattering matrix of an 1800 hybrid ring, and prove that this component can be
used for combining and subtracting two signals.

8. Prove by s-parameter analysis that a three-port network cannot be lossless, reciprocal, and
matched at all ports. 5

9. Derive the scattering matrix of Wilkinson Power divider by using even/ odd mode analysis.
