TEMPLE OF GLORY ABUJA

SCHOOL OF WISDOM OUTLINE
SUNDAY JULY 25, 2021
TOPIC: ANSWERING LIFE’S ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS 3
“WHY AM I HERE?” (question of purpose)

Bible text: 1 John 3:8b KJV

...For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the
devil.
Memory verse: Job 42:2 NIV
I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted

Introduction
“The greatest tragedy in life is not death… but life without a reason. It’s dangerous to be alive
and not know why you were given life” is a popular quote by Dr. Myles Munroe. Most people live
their lives without a sense of purpose- an understanding of the problem a manufacturer intends
a product to solve. Our Bible text last week describes us as God’s “handiwork.” Meaning that
everyone is specially designed by God with unique gifts and abilities and understanding of the
“why” of our uniqueness is understanding purpose.

What is purpose
Purpose is your “why” , the reason you do the things you do and why you live the lifestyle you
do. It defines who you are, it reflects your passions and values. Purpose is important because it
gives meaning to life and helps us define our intentions and priorities. An understanding of
purpose is finding real fulfillment.

1. Purpose, priorities and intentions (1 John 3:8b)

From our bible text above we see that Jesus understood His purpose. God had declared after
the fall of man in Genesis Chapter 3:15, that the seed of the woman will bruise satan’s head.
Jesus is that seed and His purpose on earth he understood completely. This purpose influenced
the relationships He kept, the places he went, the things he did and those He never did. Where
there is an understanding of purpose, there will be a strong moral conviction, self control and
strong ethical boundaries. Jesus knew how to prioritize, to do things in their order of importance.
He was not a drifter. He knew what to do and when to do what should be done. He understood
His purpose and all of his decisions were aligned to that purpose from as early as age twelve
(Luke 2:9). His favourite disciple Peter could not even talk Him out of it (Matthew 16:23)

2. Source of Purpose (Genesis 1)

God in the beginning spoke creation into being and gave each of them their purpose.
Every manufacturer knows the problem his product should solve. God is the Creator of
all things He is the source of every purpose.
3. Purpose of the body (1 Cor. 6:14&19; Romans 12:1)
Our body is the suit that makes it possible for us to exist on earth. If an Astronaut
decides to visit the moon, He can’t survive there with the earth suit. He has to change
into something else called a space suit. If a man chooses to go to heaven you know the
kind of suit he must put on. God gave us our bodies as a trust. Meaning we are to care
for and not abuse it. Our scripture above says that our bodies are God’s temple, His
dwelling place. My question is, if God meets you in the street and tells you he wants to
visit your house, how much effort will you put in ensuring the house is clean and fresh?
Put that same effort in keeping your bodies healthy and fit, devoid of abuse or anything
unethical or immoral. Understand the “why” of the body, treat and treasure it accordingly.

4. Purpose of the mind (Romans 12:2, Philippians 4:8)

The mind is for our transformation. The English word “transformed” is from the Greek
word “metamorphoo” which means to be transfigured or changed from one form, state or
level to another.” We all remembered “metamorphosis” in biology, the stages insects
undergo to fully come to maturity. Most of us were once in nursery or primary school but
today you are in secondary level or University level. You have moved from one level to
another through the power of your mind. If you're not you would still be in kindergarten.
The purpose of the mind is not to worry, envy, jealousy, lust or any negative thoughts in
order for us to keep experiencing continuous transformation all through life. To keep our
mind healthy, Apostle Paul gave us a recipe in Phillipians 4:8. He enjoined us to think
truthful, honest, just, pure, lovely thoughts; things with good report, virtue and that is
praiseworthy.

5. Purpose of your life (Gen. 3:15; 1John 3:8b 2Tim. 4:7)

It is important we discover and understand the purpose of our life, the overall “why”
behind our existence, write it down and live in conformity to what we have written. Jesus’
purpose was written thousands of years before He showed up on earth. He was to
bruise the head of the serpent and He fulfilled that purpose. Paul was visited by Jesus
on his way to Damascus to persecute the Church (Acts 26:13-18). His purpose was
handed to him by Jesus. He lived the remaining part of his life fulfilling it. He went
through shipwrecks, persecutions and misunderstanding but he never abandoned his
purpose. When he was done he announced, “I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith.”( Timothy 4:7 NIV)
Every youth should prayerfully ask God what your “why” is. Write it down and live
in conformity to it. I believe that bigger than Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos,
Pastor Iyke are amongst us. Amen.
