FUNCTION
Learning Competencies:
Many of the equations used to describe real – life relationships between two quantities are functions. In many
situations in science, business, and mathematics, a correspondence exists between two sets of objects. The idea of
correspondence plays a central role in the formulation of the concept of function. You have already had experiences
with correspondences in everyday life. For example; to each person there corresponds an age, to each cellular phone
there corresponds a mobile number, to each circle there corresponds an area. Can you cite other examples that describe
real – life relationship between two quantities?
▪ FUNCTION - is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only one value in the range by some rule.
- a function f is a rule that assigns to each element x in the first set of values, exactly one and only one
element, called f(x) or y, in the second set of values. The variable x is called the independent variable,
while f(x) or y, is the dependent variable.
Example 1: Give a function C that can represent the cost of buying x meals, if a meal costs ₱40.00.
Solution:
i. What is asked? – represent the total cost of x meals if each meal costs ₱40.00.
ii. What is given? – cost of each meal = ₱40.00
iii. What operation should be used? – Multiplication
iv. Number sentence: Total cost = cost of each meal x number of meals

➢ PIECEWISE FUNCTION – a function that is defined on a series of interval; defined by multiple subfunctions,
where each applies to a certain interval of the main function’s domain.
140
𝑓(𝑥) = 140 + 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) = 140 − 𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) = 140𝑥 𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑥
2. Jane is a manager in a restaurant. Her monthly salary is ₱12,500. What is her daily salary if she works for n days?
12,500 𝑛
𝑓(𝑛) = 𝑓(𝑛) = 12,500𝑛 𝑓(𝑛) = 𝑛 − 12,500 𝑓(𝑛) =
𝑛 12,500
3. In an amusement park, a bicycle rent costs ₱30 for the first hour or a fraction of an hour and an additional ₱10.00 for
each succeeding hour. Represent the cost for renting bicycle for x hours.
30 𝑖𝑓 0<𝑥≤1 30 𝑖𝑓 𝑥≤1
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑓(𝑥) = {
30 + 10(𝑥 − 1) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥>1 30 + 10𝑥 𝑖𝑓 𝑥>1
4. A school’s fair committee wants to sell t-shirts for their school fair. They found a supplier that sells it at a price of
₱175.00 per piece but they can sell it in ₱15,000.00 for a bulk order of 100 shirts and ₱125.00 for each excess t-shirt
after that. Use a piecewise function to represent the cost in terms of the number of t-shirts purchased.

➢ EVALUATING FUNCTION – replacing the variable in the function with a value from the function’s domain and
computing for the result. To denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).
𝒚 = 𝒇(𝒙)
The function notation y = f(x) tells
you that y is a function of x (y is
dependent to the x). If there is a rule
relating y to x, such as y = 2x – 1,
then we can also write:
To evaluate the function, take the given value of x, and replace (substitute) that value for x in the expression.
Example 1: Evaluate the function f(x) = 2x + 4 at x = 3. Example 2: Evaluate the function g(x) = 2x + 3 at g(a + 1).
𝑥 2 + 5 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 0
Example 3: If 𝑓(𝑥) = { find, f(-2) and f(4).
5𝑥 − 1 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 0
f(-2) f(4)
Solution: since -2 is less than 0, use the first Solution: since 4 is greater than 0, use the second
equation, 𝑥 2 + 5 equation, 5𝑥 − 1
f(-2) = (−2)2 + 5 f(4) = 5(4) – 1
f(-2) = 4 + 5 f(4) = 20 – 1

A. Tell whether each statement is True or False.
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 5 𝑎𝑡 𝑓(4)
2. ℎ(𝑏) = 3𝑏 2 − 2𝑏 + 1 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑏 = −3
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 3 𝑎𝑡 𝑓(3𝑏 − 2)

➢ OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS – functions can be defined in terms of other functions such that if we are given
𝑔
any two functions, g and h we can define the four new functions as g + h, g – h, gh, and .
ℎ
For example, the function defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 is the sum of 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 and ℎ(𝑥) = 8𝑥
𝑔 𝑔(𝑥)
Quotient: ( ) (𝑥) = ; ℎ(𝑥) ≠0
ℎ ℎ(𝑥)
a. (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) c. (𝑓𝑔)(𝑥)
𝑓
b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) d. ( ) (𝑥)
𝑔
Solution:

Example 2: If 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 − 5 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 3, find:
a. (𝑓 ∘ 𝑔)(𝑥) b. (𝑔 ∘ 𝑓)(𝑥)

1. A mall charges ₱35.00 for the first two hours as a parking fee and an additional ₱15.00 for each hour (or a fraction
of it) after that. If you park for more than twelve hours, you instead pay a flat rate of ₱250.00. The parking area
operates from 7 A.M to 11 PM every day.
a. How much will be charged to a car owner who parked a car from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM?
b. How much will be charged to a car owner who parked a car from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM?

2. A pet groomer charges his service fee according to the weight of your pet. If your pet is 15 pounds and under, the
groomer charges 350 pesos. If your pet is between 15 to 40 pounds he charges 400 pesos. If your pet is over 40
pounds, he charges 400 plus an additional 20 pesos for each pound over 40 lbs. What is the weight of your pet if
the groomer charged you 670 pesos?
