1. Describe the 19th century Philippines as represented in the film.

The Philippines during the 19th century was under the colony of Spain as represented in
the film "Ganito kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon". It was shown that the priest were powerful
that time for they have close connections with the Spanish government as well as they have
enough wealth. Filipinos were living in fear because of the cruelty of the Spaniards that is why,
some of them were living in mountainous area to hide themselves.

2. Based on your reading, what can you say about the film's representation of the 19th
century?

Based on my reading, the film has really interpreted the situation of the Philippines
during the 19th century. Slavery is very evident as well as abuse of authority was there. Being
against with the government is like a suicidal act that is why, revolutionary groups are very

m
careful with every actions that they are planning to do. On the other hand, being friend with the

er as
priest and the government is an advantage for they could help you in trouble. It is also said that

co
priests are more powerful than the government officials because its term of service.

priest stays for a long term.

3. What is the main question that the film seeks to answer?

The main question that is frequently asked in the film was "Who is the Filipino?". The
o

said question was given a variety of answers such as Filipino is one who fought for his/her
aC s

country, while the other say Filipinos are ones who were born and the original settlers of the
vi y re

Philippines. The answer for the question seemed to be unclear since then. It clearly shows that
during the 19th century, Philippine folks still has confusion with their identity.

4. What is your reflection based on the film and your understanding?

ed d

The 19th century has really brought the Philippines with so many challenges such as
ar stu

abuses, slavery and unjust government. Spaniards were able to manipulate the people and a
massive killings occurred during their time. But as we look at its other side, those challenges
has just unravelled that Filipinos has the idea of what's right for them and they were able to
is

withstand for it. Those unrighteous actions of the powerful people pushed the Filipinos to
Th

revolutionize and to put an end to the system of life they had during those time. With it, the
Filipino people unite for a common goal and was able to capture the freedom from the Spanish
colony that they have been fighting for so long. I have sought out that the 19th century was not
just about a challenge from a cruel ruler, but rather, it is also about the challenge for nation
sh

building.
