Lesson 4 - PMDAS

The document discusses the order of operations known as PEMDAS or PEDMAS. It explains that PEMDAS is an acronym that stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. The document provides examples of applying the PEMDAS order of operations to solve multi-step equations. It emphasizes that operations with the same priority, like multiplication and division or addition and subtraction, should be solved from left to right.

Order of Operations

LESSON 4 ( PMDAS )

EQUIP

Let’s Recall
The pointers written inside the box below will help you recall and accomplish
the next drill.

MDAS RULES

✓ First, start solving equations from LEFT to RIGHT

✓ Then, perform ALL the Multiplication OR Division operations from
LEFT to RIGHT, whichever comes first.
✓ Lastly perform the Addition or Subtraction operations from
LEFT to RIGHT, whichever comes first.

What’s New
Read th sentence below.

Perry Makes Delicious Avocado Sandwich.

How many words are there?

Write the beginning letter of each word in the box

The initial letters such as P.M.D.A.S will be used as we discuss the orders or
operations following the rules of (PMDAS) or Parenthesis, Multiplication, Division,
Addition, Subtraction.

Since you already know the rules of MDAS this lesson will be easier.
What is It
(PMDAS) is the acronym for Parenthesis, Multiplication, Division, Addition,
Subtraction.

Or Sometimes they use (GMDAS) Groupings, Multiplication, Division, Addition,

Subtraction.

PMDAS is a set of rules that tells you the order of computation, that is, which operation
to perform first.

PMDAS Rules
✓ ALWAYS simplify everything inside the grouping symbol such as
parenthesis ( ). Our main goal is to remove the grouping symbol. Solve
the equation inside the parenthesis from left to right following the MDAS
rules.

✓ Multiply and/or divide whichever comes first from LEFT to RIGHT. This tells
us that multiplication and division have a higher level of importance
than addition and subtraction.

✓ Add and/or Subtract whichever comes first from LEFT to RIGHT.

Example 1
( 12 ÷ 3 x 5 ) - 8 ÷ 2

First, solve the numbers inside the parenthesis

( 12 ÷ 3 x 5 ) – 8 ÷ 2 ( ). Since we have Division and Multiplication
inside a parenthesis, solve from LEFT to RIGHT
s
Next, we still have numbers to be solved inside the
(4 x 5)– 8 ÷ 2 parenthesis, (4 x 5). After solving this,
parenthesis will be removed.
Since we do not have a grouping symbol
20 – 8 ÷ 2 anymore, apply the MDAS rules. In this portion,
we need to divide 8 by 2.
Lastly, we need to subtract the two remaining
20 – 4 numbers.

16 final answer
( 12 ÷ 3 x 5 ) - 8 ÷ 2
Example 2

First, solve the numbers inside the parenthesis

14 + 5 - ( 12 x 3 ÷ 2) ( ). Since we have Division and Multiplication
inside a parenthesis, solve from LEFT to RIGHT
s
Next, we still have numbers to be solved inside the
14 + 5 - ( 36 ÷ 2 ) parenthesis, (36 ÷ 2 ). After solving this,
parenthesis will be removed.
Since we do not have a grouping symbol
14 + 5 - 18 anymore, apply the MDAS rules. In this portion,
we need to add 14 and 5.
Lastly, we need to subtract the two remaining
19 - 18 numbers.

1 final answer

4 x ( 16 + 3 x 7 ÷ 3 ) - 6
Example 3
First, solve the numbers inside the parenthesis
4 x ( 16 + 3 x 7 ÷ 3 ) - 6 ( ). Apply the MDAS rules. In this portion,
we have to multiply ( 3 x 7 ).
s
Next, we still have numbers to be solved inside the
4 x ( 16 + 21 ÷ 3 ) - 6 parenthesis. Apply the MDAS rules. In this
portion, we have to divide ( 21 ÷ 3 ).
We still have numbers to be solved inside the
4 x ( 16 + 7 ) - 6 parenthesis. Add ( 16 + 7 ). once done,
Parenthesis will be remove.
We finally remove the grouping symbol (). In
4 x 23 - 6 This portion apply the MDAS rules again.
Multiply first ( 4 x 23 )
Finally perform the last operation
92 - 6
86 final answer
(7 x 4) ÷ (3 + 4) – (5 – 2) + (12 – 6)
Example 4

First, perform the operations inside each

(7 x 4) ÷ (3 + 4) – (5 – 2) + (12 – 6) parenthesis. Solve this one by one, from LEFT
to RIGHT. Do not forget to remove the
grouping symbol once done.
s
Second, perform the given operation of the
28 ÷ (3 + 4) – (5 – 2) + (12 – 6) next set of numbers inside the parenthesis.
Third, perform the given operation of the
28 ÷ 7 – (5 – 2) + (12 – 6) next set of numbers inside the parenthesis.
Fourth, perform the given operation of the
28 ÷ 7 – 3 + (12 – 6) next set of numbers inside the parenthesis.
Finally, there is no grouping symbol () left.
28 ÷ 7 – 3 + 6 apply the MDAS rules. Divide first (28 ÷7)
4 – 3 + 6 In this portion, just perform the given operation
from LEFT to RIGHT.
1 + 6 Finally, add these numbers.

7 final answer

STACK
PEMDAS is a mnemonic device that can help us remember the order of operations
which we already know stands for

P Parenthesis

M Multiplication

D Division

A Addition

S Subtraction

The operations of multiplication and division have the same level of priority.
Although MDAS rules, do not be confused when to divide and multiply, always
perform the one which appears first from LEFT to RIGHT.
The same rule applies to addition and subtraction. These operations are of equal
level in terms of importance. Perform the operation that comes first as you work it
out from LEFT to RIGHT.
