ACTIVITY #1 I Need Help, Where Will I Go?

Instruction:
1. If something is bothering about life matters: academics, relationships, family, identity, and financial
concerns, with whom do you share your problem? Will you pursue formal help or a non-formal help?
Why or why not? Explain your answer. Write your answer on the box.

Open Notes
Name: Mary Elaine A. Maghanoy

If something is bothering me about life matter, I share my problem with my friend because I’m
comfortable talking to them and being with them, and I’ll pursue a non- formal help. Just like
what I’ve said, I’m comfortable being with them and having a non-formal help with my friend
could make the atmosphere not too serious. Because sometimes we cannot avoid having a little
crazy talk, and it will make you feel laugh and being in a comfort.

Activity#2 In What Way Will Counseling Empower Me?

“Grow like a Saint.”

NOTRE DAME OF ST. THERESE OF THE CHILD JESUS
Congregation of the Disciples of St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Instruction:
1. In our discussion on counseling goals, John McLeod contends that: “counseling aims to empower the client
by helping him/her make critical decisions in life, develop ability to cope, enhance effectiveness, and
improve quality of life”. What do you think about this statement? Do you accept or support it? How will it
empower you? Explain your answer. Write your answer in the box.
Open Notes
Name: Mary Elaine A. Maghanoy

I do support what John McLeod contends that, “counselling aims to empower the client by
helping him/her make critical decisions in life, develop ability to cope, enhance effectiveness,
and improve quality of life”, because counselling helps the client to avoid some undesired
outcomes of their decisions. Counsellors help their clients identify their goal and their possible
solutions for the problem, they help their clients improve the quality of their life, as well as their
behaviour change. The counsellor would help them with their insights, self- awareness, self-
acceptance, enlightenment, problem solving and etc. And this will empower not just me but all of
us, to know what are the right thing to do and how will we make our decisions thoroughly.

ASSESSMENT
Which Counseling Principle I Agree Most?
Instruction:
1. Among those four ethical principle that we discuss in class, namely , principle of autonomy of individuals,
principles of non-maleficence, principle of justice, and principle of fidelity, which will you choose to
present? Why this principle? What aspect of the principle influences you? Please explain. Write your
answers on the box.

Open Notes
Name: Mary Elaine A. Maghanoy

If I were to choose among the four principles, I would choose the principle of fidelity. The
principle of fidelity involves the ideas of loyalty, faithfulness and honouring the commitments. I
chose this principle because in every counselling, the counsellor and the client must trust, put
their loyalty and to honour their commitment with each other, that no matter what happens,
everything they talked about must stay in between the two of them. This aspect of principle
influenced me in a way that, me and my friend would talk about a certain problem either mine
or her and then we both honour each other’s word, we respect each other to keep that talk
within ourselves and not to broadcast it with other people.

If I will be given a chance to become a counsellor, would I grab it or not? Well for me, I won’t
grab that opportunity. It’s not that I don’t want to be a counsellor nor disliking the fact of
being a counsellor, it’s just that I am not that good in giving such advices. I’m okay being

1. How can you describe the working setting of a counselor?

The counselors work setting must be clean and organized. It must have a table in between
the counsellor and the client so that they could talk comfortably. And it should be free from
any disturbances. It must adapt private practice, the long term-care facility as well as the
short term care facilities.

I expect that the work setting of a counsellor is very good. The interior design of that
workplace must be designed professionally. And in that four corners of the room, they must
feel comfortable, and inside that room must not be too loud, and it must have private
practice.

ASSESSMENT
What are the reasons why they are deployed in different work settings?

Counselors are deployed in different work setting because their works would depend on their
specialty which would be determined by the setting in which the counselors work as well as the
population they serve. Normally, counselors are challenged with children, adolescents, adults and
families that has multiple issues.

Write your 2-3 paragraphs reflection on these questions:

1. If you work as a school guidance counselor, how are going to help adolescent cope with their
academic concerns?

If I will become a guidance counselor, I would do a one on one counselling with those adolescents
who has concerns with their academics. I’ll probably ask them to share to me their concerns with
regards of their academics. And with that I’ll them to always keep their main goals in mind. They
might feel embarrass telling you or telling me about their poor grades but that’s okay. I’ll help him
or her, we will work together to determine what the goal is.

It’s just normal for a person to have a failing grades sometimes. Just do keep in mind that it’s not all
about the grades. It is about on how you learn or what you have learned in school. And no matter
how or what the reason is for them to have some failing grades, I’ll let them know that I will always
be by their side. I’ll guide and help them with their problems as long as I can.

2. What is the importance of knowing where the counselors work?

It is very important for us to know where the counselors work, because we don’t have a counselor
which studies only one specialty. Counselors do have a lot of specialties, there’s a lot of counselors
in different fields. One of those specialties are the school counselors, or what you call guidance
counselors. Guidance counselors help the students with their academic problems.

So there is a lot of counselors work according to their specialties, and we should know where they
work so that if we need some guidance from them we will know to whom we will go and ask for

help. And it would be very helpful to seek help to them so that they could guide us with our
decisions.
3. If you are going to become a counselor, in what particular work setting are you going to and
why?

If I were to become a counselor, in what particular setting am I going to? If I were to become a
counselor, I’ll choose the school setting. School counselors or what they call the guidance counselor
provides programs and services in which can help with the students. Guidance counselors also help
students in planning their future career goals in terms of their courses in the next journey of their
school years.

I chose this kind of setting because I find this course helpful not just with the students but also for
me. But it’s not like other specialty of counselling is not helpful, it is really helpful to everyone, it is
just that I would find this setting kind of interesting and not too boring because I’ll be dealing with
students, and I became a student as well so maybe we could have the same vibes that won’t make
the atmosphere inside that room boring and awkward.

APPLICATION
Where are the counselors?
Instruction:
1. Your task is to locate the counselors in Manila through internet.
2. Which work setting can you find many of the counselors? What could be the reason why
many of the counselors in that particular setting? Please explain.
3. Write your answer in the box below.

Open Notes

As I surf through the internet, for me, the work setting that I found in which there were lots of
counselors were the government setting. Knowing that in Manila there were a huge population
of individuals, it is a huge city and they cannot avoid having or experiencing some problems in
life, not just physically but also mentally. Also, there were people in Manila who uses drugs,
rugby’s etc. with the help of the counselors, this people could help themselves start a new life.
And, guidance counselors in this work setting does not only work with themselves but the work
with the collaboration of the social workers. They conduct counseling towards the individuals
which is referred by the government agencies.

WEEK 5

ASSESSMENT Application
A. Count Me In, Count me Out: Will I Give up My Job or Not?
Instruction: React on the situations below.
In the area of counseling relationships of the Code of Conduct, it states that “Counselors should
not have any type of sexual intimacies with clients and do not counsel persons with whom they have
sexual relationship. Counselors should not also engage with sexual intimacies with their former
clients within a minimum of two years.”

1. What if you are a counselor and you have fallen in love with your client and the client has also
fallen in love with you. Since, it is unethical to pursue the relationship; you need to quit your job.
Your job is also important to you. Now, what will be your decision?

As a counselor, I would do my job prim and proper. I won’t make decisions that would affect my
beloved and dream job, because if I commit into something I am willing to put my life just to make
it better, and if I commit I am willing to take a risk. I have experienced a lot of ups and downs just
to make it to the finish line. I make sure that what I do/ will do is worth risking for, besides I love
my job, I love what I am doing. And if falling in love into someone, most especially my client would
be unethical for my job. I won’t quit my job, I’ll settle what I feel towards my client. As what they
say, love can wait. Maybe it may sound immature or bitter, but I do love my job and I am
contented with what I already have, because having this job right now is a great success and
achievement for me.

2. If you have chosen the other decision, answer the following questions: Why? Why it is more
ethical? Support your answer. Explain your answer.

As a counselor, I won’t ever choose of quitting the job that I have, because I’ve been through a lot
to get the position I have right now, and I know that it may be sound unfair and selfish with him
but I always honor my vow. Besides, everything that I am doing is dedicated to my parents. I’ll
settle whatever this feeling may be, I’ll talk him, I’ll explain everything then maybe he’ll
understand. It may be just a small session of counselling, maybe we were just attracted with each
other others characteristics, it’s just an attraction, we don’t know maybe one day it will just fade
away. I know that he could find someone better.

B. In the area of confidentiality of the Code of Ethics, there is a portion on client’s right to privacy.
What if the counselor, in his/her conversation with the client, found out that the client accidentally
killed a person, will you report the client to police or not? Explain your answer.

If I would be that counselor who happened to have a client who accidentally killed someone, I won’t
report him or her to the police. I will always honour my commitment upon accepting him or her as
my client, I’ll respect his or her privacy. However, I will orient him/her, I’ll tell the consequences of
his/her action whether it’s by accident or not. And I’ll give him/her an advice to go to the police
station and tell everything what happened. I will guide him/her no matter what happens. And it is
my job as a counselor to help my client with the decisions that they’ve come up. It’s my job to help
them do what’s the right thing to do. At least, if he/she will tell the truth, then whatever may the
decision of the court may be, it won’t be too much.

A. Essay
1. Why is it important to know the processes of counseling?

It is very important to know the processes of counselling, because if we don’t know the
process then we do not know as well how to conduct a counsel. This processes would help
us to know how to deal with our clients, on how to make them give you their trust with
regards of their certain problems. And as a counselor, to know the process would help you
become an effective counselor.

2. For you, what is the most important stage of counseling and why?

For me, the most important stage of counseling is the Stage One: Relationship Building.
Without this first stage, which is the relationship building in between the client and the
counselor, it would be hard for you as a counselor to know your client. Because before you
could proceed with the other process, you should consider this one first not just because
this is the first process but because this process would establish a genuine interaction
between the two of you. You can help clients first to understand themselves and to have a
focus.

3. As a student, what is the significance of studying the processes of counseling and how can you
apply it?

As a student, the importance of studying the processes of counseling is to help us know the
ways to follow in doing counselling. This will help us have a better interaction with our
clients. I could apply it if someone, like a friend of mine would ask some help by getting
his/her trust first of course, because most of our friends have some trust issues. I want
him/her to have some trust because of course I do know the word privacy. I want to help
my friend as much as I can.
