Refrigerator Refrigerant-134a enters the capillary tube of a refrigerator as
saturated liquid at 0.8 MPa and is throttled to a pressure of 0.12 MPa.
Determine the quality of the refrigerant at the nal state and the
temperature drop during this process.
Experts anwser:
In the above diagram, 3-4 is the throttling process, At 3 saturated
liquid enter at 800 KPa into the cappilary tube and throttled to
pressure 120 KPa.
P2 = P3 = 800 KPa (As process 2-3 is adiabatic process)
P4 = P1 = 120 KPa (As process 2-3 is adiabatic process)
From table we have
At 800 KPa
hf = 95.5 KJ/Kg = h3
and At 120 KPa
hf = 22.5 KJ/Kg
hfg = 214.5 KJ/Kg
Process 3-4
Process 3-4 is a throtteling process which is isoenthalpic in nature
i.e enthalpy = constant
h3 = h4 = 95.5 KJ/Kg (From Table)
We know that
h4 = hf + xhfg (all at 120 KPa) (where x is dryness fraction)
95.5 = 22.5 + x 214.5 (all in KPa)
x = 0.34 or 34% (Quality)
It means 34% vapour and rest 66% liquid.
