Activity – 1: Study the following sentences in column (A) and underline the errors. Discuss with your
partner and note down your analysis in column (B). Write the corrected sentence in column (C). The first
example has been done for you. (W = Wrong, R = Right, A = Analysis) (C = Comment)
1. W : My sister is fond with ice-cream.
R : My sister is fond of ice-cream.
A : The preposition with does not follow the adjective ‘fond’.Fond is followed by of. Dear students,
there is a chapter called ‘Words Followed by Appropriate Prepositions’ and you must be thorough
with at least some of these words. There are certain nouns, adjectives and verbs which always take
fixed prepositions after them.
2. W : This bouquet is smelling sweet.
R : This bouquet smells sweet.
A : The following verbs are not generally used in any continuous tense.
1. Verbs of perception (senses): see, touch, smell, taste, hear, feel, notice, recognize
2. Verbs expressing feelings and emotions: love, like, hate, dislike, desire, fear, detest wish,
want, long, hope, refuse, prefer etc.
3. Verbs of mental activity: know, understand, remember, recollect, believe, think, suppose,
forget, agree, consider, trust mean, mind, imagine etc.
4. Verbs of possession: owe, own, possess, belong, have, consist, contain, comprise etc.
5. Verbs appearance: appear, seem, look
6. Some other verbs: need, cost, value
3. W : Rajesh is coming to college everyday by a scooter.
R : Rajesh comes/goes to college everyday by scooter.
A : 1. Daily activities (recurrent actions) must always be expressed in simple present tense. 2. By is
used to denote means of transportation. We always use by + vehiclewithout any articles in
between.e.g. by train, by bus, by plane, by scooter, by car, by ship; by water, by air, by road
etc.But, you can use on/in + a/an/the + vehicle. Get off, get down from, get into are also used with
vehicles. For animals we use on. e.g. on horse back, on elephant back, on camels, on mules etc.
4. W : I am learningpiano since my 7th class.
R : I have been learningthe piano since my 7th class.
A : Since and for are used to denote time duration. When there are time phrases with since or for in a
sentence, the tense must be in present perfect continuous. We use the before musical instruments.
5. W : The parcel received by my father yesterday.
R : The parcel was received by my father yesterday.
A : The sentence is in the passive voice. The correct passive verb is: was received. The main verb in
the passive voice is always preceded by an appropriate auxiliary verb according to the tense it
denotes.
6. W : The minister along with his followers are coming to the function.
R : The minister along with his followers is coming to the function.
A : When two subjects are connected using: with, along with, together with, accompanied by, as well
as etc., the verb agrees only with the first subject in number and person.
7. W : If you study well, you passed the examination.
R : If you study well, you will pass the examination.
A : This is an example of If-clause/Conditional clause Type – I: Open/probable condition. In this
conditional clause, the verb in the if-clause must be in simple present and the verb in the main
clause must be in simple future tense. [If + Sub + V 1(-s / -es) + …., Sub +will/shall/can/may +
main verb + object)
8. W : Prasanth is one of the player in the team.
R : Prasanth is one of the players in the team.
A : The phrase one of my / his/ her/ the/ theseis always followed by a plural noun.
The structure is: one of the + plural noun.
Murali is one of my best friends.
Mumbai is one of the biggest cities in India.
Also consider the structure: one of the + plural noun + singular verb …
One of my friendslives in London.
One of the benches is missing.
9. W : The principal said that we can bringmobiles to the college.
R : The principal said that we could bring mobiles to the college.
A : When the reporting verb (said) is in past tense, the verb in the reported speech must also be in the
appropriate past tense. But, in case of universal truths, habitual actions, second conditional, the
verb in the reported speech does not change even if the reporting verb (said) is in past tense.
e.g.The teacher said the earth revolves round the sun.
10. W : Where you kept my book yesterday?
R : Where did you keep my book yesterday?
A : In interrogative sentences the word order is:
(Wh-word) + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + ……?
11. W : Rani asked me why did I call her.
R : Rani asked me why I called her.
A : An interrogative sentence in the direct speech becomes a declarative sentence in the indirect
speech. The sentence doesn’t still remain in the question order.
(auxiliary verb + subject + main verb > subject + auxiliary verb + main verb)
12. W : Though he ran fast, but he could not catch the bus.
R : Though he ran fast, he could not catch the bus. // He ran fast but he could not catch the bus.
A : You can use either though or but in a sentence. You cannot use both of them in a sentence.
Though, although, even though are subordinating conjunctions. They are used in complex
sentences. But, yet, still are coordinating conjunctions. They are used in compound sentences. So,
a sentence can either be a complex or a compound sentence but not both at a time.
Notes:
1. Yet can be used as a conjunction and also as an adverb.
We have not yet decided what to do. (adverb)
He ran fast yet he could not catch the bus. (conjunction)
2. Still can be used as a noun, an adjective, an adverb and also as a conjunction.
Can you please give me a still for photo. (noun)
Still waters run deep. (adjective)
It is still raining. (adverb)
He got first class still he is not satisfied. (conjunction)

A. Correct the following sentences.
1. W : Every one of the students have attended the exam.
R : Every one of the students has attended the exam.
C : Every one of the + plural noun + singular verb + ……….
2. W : The items in this shopcosts much higher than thatof other shops.
R : The items in this shop cost much higher than thosein other shops.
C : The subject of the sentence ‘The items’ is plural and so the verb must also be plural in number.
That should be changed to those. The preposition of is changed to in.
3. W : Each of the girls are participating in the arrangements.
R : Each of the girls is participating in the arrangement.
C : Each of + plural noun + singular verb …
4. W : Neither of the two puppies resemble their mom.
R : Neither of the two puppies resembles their mom.
C : Neither is a distributive pronoun. It means no one of the two. Neither deals with things separately.

5. W : The news in this paper are very interesting.
R : The news in this paper is very interesting.
C : The word news is singular. It takes a singular verb. There are certain nouns which seem to be
plural but in reality they are always singular and they take a singular verb after them. The list of
such nouns is given below. Study them.
Names of diseases: rickets, rabies, mumps, measles, diabetes, jaundice, hepatitis, aids etc.
W : Mumps are a painful disease.
R : Mumps is a painful disease.
Names of subjects (ending in -ics): mathematics, physics, statistics, economics, civics, etc.
W : Mathematics are my favouring subject.
R : Mathematics is my favourite subject.
Names of games: billiards, snookers, gymnastics, tennis, caroms, darts, athletics etc.
W : Caroms are an interesting game.
R : Caroms is an interesting game.
C : Also note that we don’t use the before the names of diseases, games and sports and subjects.
6. W : A flock of sheep have just returned from grazing.
R : A flock of sheep has just returned from grazing.
C : The subject ‘A flock’ is singular in number so it takes a singular verb.
7. W : Spending time on social media like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter are a waste of time.
R : Spending time on social media like Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter is a waste of time.
C : The subject is ‘Spending time’ and it is singular. It takes a singular verb.
8. W : The entire furniture in this room do not cost more than three lakh rupees.
R : The entire furniture in this room doesn’t costmore than three lakh rupees.
C : Furniture is singular. it takes a singular verb.
There are certain nouns which are always singular in number. They don’t have plural forms. They
always take singular verbs with them. Study these nouns:advice, anger, business, courage,
crockery, damage, equipment, fun, hair, homework, ignorance, information, knowledge, leisure,
luck, mischief, money, music, news, patience, permission, poetry, progress, poverty, scenery,
machinery, jewelry, furniture, luggage, alphabet, bread, work, paper, stationery, soap, rubbish,
weather, confectionary, vocabulary, baggage etc.
9. W : The Principal along with the Heads are coming this way now.
R : The Principal along with the Heads is coming this way now.
C : When two subjects are connected using: with, along with, together with, accompanied by etc., the
verb agrees only with the first subject in number and person.
10. W : He has given me many advice.
R : He has given me much advice.
C : Advice is uncountable. There is no plural for it. We can use some advice, any advice, much
advice, the advice, a (nice/excellent) piece of advice etc. Don’t turn the word into plural. Advices
is wrong. Advice is a noun. Advise is a verb. Note the difference in spelling. The inflectional
suffixes: -s, -es, -ing, -ed are added to advise.
B. Rewrite the following sentences by using appropriate articles wherever necessary.

C : The word European begins with a vowel but it has a consonant sound so we must use a before it.

C : Though the word useful begins with a vowel it has a consonant sound so we must a before it.

C : The word onebegins with a vowel but it has consonant sound so we must use a before it.

C : The is used before things that are unique such as: sun, earth, sky, stars, etc.

C : We use a/an before a singular (common) (countable)noun.

R : Have you read the book that I had given you?
C : Things that are made particular take the before them.
9. W : Reshma is a cleverer of the two sisters.

C : We sue the before a comparative adjective on two occasions. The first one is when the
comparative adjective is followed by the phrase of the two. The structure is: the + comparative
adjective + of the two… The second one is when two comparative adjectives are used in parallel
construction to talk about proportion or its opposite such as: The + comparative adjective +
subject + verb, the comparative adjective + subject +verb (The older we grow, the wiser we
become.)
10. W : I have recently purchased a Bhagvad Gita.
R : I have recently purchased the Bhagvad Gita.
C : We use the before the names of Holy Scriptures like: Bhagvad Gita, Bible, Quran, etc.The is also
used before well known books, newspapers, etc.

C : Things that are not made particular take the indefinite article a before them.

C : Ordinal numbers such as first, second, third, last, etc. take the before them.

C : The correct expressions are: the South East, the South West, the North East and the North West.

or it can be placed at the end of the sentence as in:
John and Raman have not paid the exam fee yet.
B. Locate the segment that has an error and correct it. The first one is done as an example.

the French, the Danish, the British etc. are treated are as plural nouns.
