A. DIRECTION: Put a check mark in the corresponding space if the numbers are divisible by 2, 3, 4,
5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.

B. Solve the following by finding the value of the unknown digits in each item represented by a and
b.

1. The number a457 is divisible by 3. Find then the value of a.

RULE: The number is divisible by 3 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 3.

a + 4 + 5 + 7 = a + 16

Since it is divisible by 3, find a number that can be added to 16 that will make it divisible by
3.

Let a = 2

2 + 4 + 5 + 7 = 18

Since the sum of the digits is 18 and it is divisible by 3 we can say that the value of a = 2.

2. If the number 56b714 is divisible by 6, find the value of b.

RULE: The number must be divisible by 3 and 2. So, the sum of the digits must be divisible by
3 and the last digit must be an even number.
5 + 6 + b + 7 + 1 + 4 = b + 23
Since it is divisible 6, we must find a number that can be added to 23 that will make it
divisible by 3.
Let b = 1
5 + 6 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 4 = 24
Since the sum of the digits is 24 which is divisible by 3 we can say that the value of b = 1.
3. The number 54a21b8 is divisible by 6. Find all the possible value combination of a and b.

RULE: The number must be divisible by 3 and 2. So, the sum of the digits must be divisible by
3 and the last digit must be an even number.

5 + 4 + a + 2 + 1 + b + 8 = a + b + 20

Since it is divisible by 6, find two numbers that can be added to 20 that will make divisible by
3.

Possible values of a and b combined.

If a = 1, then b =3
If a = 2, then b =2
If a = 3, then b =1
If a = 4, then b =3
If a = 3, then b =4
If a = 5, then b =5
If a = 6, then b =4
If a = 4, then b =6, and so on as long as the sum of a + b + 20 is divisible by 3.

4. The six-digit number a1989b is divisible by 72. Determine a and b.

RULE: The number must be divisible by 8 and 9. So, the sum of the digits must be divisible by
9 and the last three digits must form a number that is divisible by 8.

a + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 + b = a + 27 + b

For us to get the value of a and b, find first the value of b for us to determine the value of a.
So, for us to determine the value of b get the last three digits of the number and it must
form a number that is divisible by 8.

89b
Let b = 6
8 9 6 divide it by 8 to check if it is divisible by 8, so, after dividing the last three digits by 8 we
arrived to an answer of 112 and that means that the last three digits is divisible by 8 and we
can say that the value of b is 6.

So, after getting the value of b let us substitute the value of b and find for the value of a and
in order for us to get the value of a we should make sure that the sum of the digits is
divisible by 9.

a + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 6 = a + 33
Since it is divisible 72, we must find a number that can be added to 33 that will make it
divisible by 9.

Let a = 3

3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 6 = 36

Since the sum of the digits is 36 which is divisible by 9 we can say that the value of a = 3.
Therefore, the value of a = 3 and the value of b = 6.

5. The number 5ab72 is divisible by 12. Determine a and b.

RULE: The number must be divisible by 3 and 4. So, the sum of the digits must be divisible by
3 and the last two digits must form a number that is divisible by 4.

5 + a + b + 7 + 2 = a + b + 14

Since it is divisible by 12, find two numbers that can be added to 14 that will make divisible
by 3.

Possible values of a and b combined.

If a = 1, then b =3
If a = 1, then b =3
If a = 2, then b =2
If a = 3, then b =1
If a = 4, then b =3
If a = 3, then b =4
If a = 5, then b =5
If a = 6, then b =4
If a = 4, then b =6, and so on as long as the sum of a + b + 14 is divisible by 3.
